The highlight: Mojo Music Fest, Mëstiza at the Oasis and San Bartolomé in Tunte
This weekend pulls in three directions — the city, the south and the mountains. In Las Palmas, the two main nights of the Mojo Music Fest run on Friday and Saturday at the Plaza de la Música Jerónimo Saavedra next to CC Las Arenas, both from 19.00 until three in the morning. Wednesday and Thursday were free; the two weekend nights are ticketed from 25 euros through tickety.es. Both running orders are now out. Friday opens with Tetas Frías at 20.00, then Gazella at 21.00, Good Franco at 22.15, Mexican electronic veterans Nortec: Bostich & Fussible at 23.30, London indie band Pynch at 01.00 — their first time in the Canaries — and LAIV closing at 02.15. Saturday runs Hostia Pedagógica at 20.00, Heal at 21.00, Belice at 22.15, the joint Los Estanques and El Canijo de Jerez project at 23.30, Coach Party from the UK at 01.00 and Supersonikka at 02.15. On both nights Fuckin’ Four Factory works the DJ booth between sets.
In the south, Saturday belongs to the Oasis at Barranco del Águila in Maspalomas, where two rooms run in parallel from 18.00 to 06.00. The main stage has Mëstiza, the Spanish DJ duo who bolt flamenco motifs onto tech house, with Solto, whose «Jamaican Bam Bam» has moved out of the clubs and onto the radio this summer, plus Franc Fala, Raffa Guido, Luis Calero and Dani Aguilar b2b Juanlu. The adjoining Jazzy Club is handed to Romanian minimal producer Arapu, backed by Álvaro Medina, Jordi Castell, Speaking Minds, Berna, Barto and Pink Mate. Tickets go through Xceed in tiers from 25 euros. Twelve hours, two rooms, two very different signatures — the longest night of the weekend.
And then there is what the south celebrates for itself. In Tunte, the mountain village that gives the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana its name, the patron-saint fiesta begins. On Friday at 20.00 the sixteenth Carrera de Carretas y Carretones rolls down from the cemetery to the Casa de la Cultura — decorated wooden carts, pushed and pulled, cheered on by half the village. At 22.00 on the Plaza de Santiago comes the Gran Noche de Conciertos with Dominican merengue singer Tony Tun Tun, Idel El Mulatico and Línea DJ. Saturday brings the verbena with Ladys Swing, Grupo Arena and Línea DJ, and on Sunday at 18.00 the Bajada del Carbonero: the figure of the charcoal burner carried down from Las Lagunas through the village behind the Banda Isleña, a thousand metres up, where the evening air already turns cool and smells of pine resin. All of it free.
Unlike the previous weekend there is no public holiday in the middle this time, which mostly means Friday and Saturday carry the nights and Sunday belongs to the villages. The rain that stood at 45 per cent on Thursday never arrived. AEMET’s Saturday-morning numbers give Las Palmas 26 degrees with a five per cent chance of rain and Sunday another 26 at zero, while Maspalomas holds at 28 under a clear sky on both days. The yellow heat notice for the peaks and the eastern, southern and western slopes applied to Friday and has now lapsed; it never amounted to a Canary Government alert, the last declaration dating from 15 August. What AEMET flags for Sunday instead is a northeasterly at force 4 to 5 with stronger gusts, and a one- to two-metre northeast swell behind it — no reason to stay in, but the beach morning at Melenara will be breezier than Saturday was. Anyone driving up to Tunte at a thousand metres in the evening should still pack something warm whatever the coast is doing.
Friday 21 August
Mojo Music Fest, first ticketed night. Plaza de la Música Jerónimo Saavedra at CC Las Arenas, Ctra. del Rincón, 19.00 to 03.00, from 25 euros via tickety.es — the cheapest tier has gone. Melenara (Telde). The summer fiestas open at Playa de Melenara. At 21.00 María Encarnación «Lala» Torres Ortega gives the pregón — the first president of the Meclasa residents’ association, part of the neighbourhood’s life for decades. Before it, a parade with band, papagüevos and children’s entertainment; after it, the comedy and drag troupe Los Salaitos and a verbena with Furia Joven. The big fireworks night, the real signature of these fiestas, comes only on 29 August.
Two earlier options: Tejeda runs «El Salpique» at the municipal pool from 20.30 to 22.30, with a diving contest, a DJ and alcohol-free cocktails, and the Museo La Fortaleza in Santa Lucía holds another stargazing evening at 21.30, free with a booking.
In the south, Christopher Burke plays Bar De Lantaarn in the Gran Chaparral Centre from 21.00, Gio Box plays Colina Mar in Puerto Rico at the same hour and Mary D’s at 23.00. At the Yumbo, NOXON opens its Friday night with entry only between 21.00 and 23.00, and The Factory runs «Hardwire» from 21.00 straight through to four.
Saturday 22 August
Mëstiza and Arapu at the Oasis carry the night in the south and Mojo Music Fest closes in the city. Gothic Rock Fest. Sala Canarias en Vivo, 20.00 to 23.30, 16 euros: An Endless Path, Hellcyon, Sao and Doctor Yao from the neighbouring island. That the same room hosted trap the night before is very much the house style.

The 61st Marcha Cicloturista Virgen de la Cuevita sets off from the Estadio de Gran Canaria at 09.00, 15 euros to enter, arriving in the village around 13.00 for the floral offering and blessing. Valleseco, Guía, Arinaga. The Lanzarote district of Valleseco has its Bajada del Tabique at 18.00 and a verbena from 21.00 with Grupo Arena, Orquesta Panamaribe and Línea DJ. Santa María de Guía fills the day with a chess tournament and a papagüevos parade, then the Verbena de San Roque at 22.00 with Havana 500, Una Más, DJ Jonás Cáceres and Antonio Boada. Arinaga has Triángulo de Sonido again at 19.30, Rupatrupa at 21.00 and the Maná tribute Chamán at 22.30.
Melenara. The romería sets off at 18.00 from the football pitch down to the church at Salinetas, followed by a verbena on the beach itself with Luz de Luna and Los Peques.

Sunday 23 August
Bajada del Carbonero in Tunte. Sunday belongs to the mountains. The procession leaves Las Lagunas at 18.00 and moves through the village behind the Banda Isleña; at 20.00 the Verbena del Carbonero follows with Orquesta Star Music, Leyenda Joven, D’Music and Línea DJ. The Misa del Señor and the pilgrims’ mass fill the daytime programme. Free. For anyone who can stay past Sunday: the patron saint’s day itself is the Monday. It opens at 04.30 with the Diana Floreada through the streets, serves Sancocho Canario on the Plaza de Santiago at 14.00, runs the «Lluvias de Agosto» verbena with Armonía Show from 15.00 and closes at 20.30 with the Gala Fin de Fiestas — dedicated this year to Nuria Medina Mejías, with Dani Calero and Tania Gil.
Sonidos entre Viñas. A festival among the vines at Bodega Los Lirios on Camino de los Lirios in Bandama, from 15.00: DJ MVBA opens, then Kimera, Endless Bridge, Oleada and Maldito Ramírez, with MVBA closing. 15 euros in advance, 18 on the door. A Sunday afternoon on the crater rim is one of the more agreeable propositions of this weekend.
Feria de Ganado El Pino. The livestock fair that opens the Pino season runs from 10.30 to 15.00 at the Finca de Osorio in Teror, free. Around 350 animals from 37 breeders across the island are announced, along with arrastre displays by the La Caldera and GC clubs, an ox-team gymkhana, Roman ploughing, threshing and shearing, milking and cheese-making, a bird show, donkey rides, a gofio tasting and the salto del pastor. Music comes from Parranda El Lebrillo with C.B. El Álamo. Global runs it free: line 215 from the Teror bus station every half hour between 9.15 and 15.15. The classic Sunday outing into the green.
San Haragán at El Burrero. Ingenio celebrates on the beach: children’s entertainment from 12.00, the paella popular at 13.00, and music from Kalima Limón, DJ Ulises Acosta and Paco Guedes. The «Plaza Splash» and «Burrero Splash» water castles run from 11.00 to 14.00.

Guía serves paella marinera at 14.30 with a foam party and a verbena with Son Karibe; Valleseco has «La chica de ayer» at 15.30, verse improviser Yeray Rodríguez at 17.00 and the Verbena de los Colores at 18.30, also with Son Karibe. In Fontanales, DJ Vhito plays the tardeo at 18.00, the romeros’ procession sets off at 21.00 and the verbena with Promaster and Armonía Show starts at 23.00. Artenara stages the children’s musical «Cocouaua» at 12.00 on the Alameda and a film evening at 21.00, and Arinaga has violinist José Luis Montesdeoca at 16.00 and Haché Tamarindos at 17.00.
Melenara, Día del Chinchorro. From 10.00 the fishermen haul the net onto the sand with the fish sellers — the most traditional morning of this weekend. At 14.00 the Taliarte-Melenara fishermen’s brotherhood puts on a barbecue, with water activities and a long solajero afternoon around it. At 19.30 the king and queen of the beach fiestas are chosen, and Cris Giannattasio sings at 20.00. In La Barrera (Valsequillo), the Cristo de las Flores mass and procession go through the neighbourhood at 12.30, band in tow.
Las Palmas is quiet on Sunday. Sandra y Laura play the «Domingos de música» slot at the Mercado del Puerto between 12.30 and 14.00, the Friends Market with local labels runs from 11.00 to 21.00 at the Hotel NH Imperial Playa in La Puntilla, and in Teror the afternoon belongs to Emilio Carisma and the tea dance at El Mesón from 17.30.
In the south, Sunday opens at 11.00 with the Frühschoppen at Café Mozart 2 in the CC Anexo II, where Christopher Burke, Detlef Cremer and Ludwig Stadlmair play into the afternoon. Gio Box takes That’s AMORE in the same centre at 21.00. And the Yumbo takes no Sunday off — the shows run as they do on any other night.
Las Palmas: the clubs
The capital’s nightlife sits in three districts. In Vegueta and Triana the biggest room is Alboroto at Calle Remedios 10 — the former Paper Club, renamed after its refit. Friday and Saturday from 23.00 to 05.00, closed Sunday. Friday runs as «Los viernes más ALBOROTADOS», and there is no advance sale: 15 euros on the door with one drink or 20 with two, reservados from 200 euros for six with the full amount back in credit, entry until 02.00, minimum age 25 and a smart dress code. A few streets away, La Biblioteca in Vegueta runs the Tech Lab electronic night on Saturday from 23.00 to 04.00 for 8 to 9 euros. Quieter, with a view over the old town: the La Azotea de Benito roof terrace on the CC Monopol, Friday and Saturday 17.00 to 02.00, Sunday until midnight.
On Playa de las Canteras, the Moma Club at Paseo 38 is the only club in the city with named line-ups for this weekend: Gotzy and Ru&man on Friday night, Lil’O and Aday Vega on Saturday, both from midnight to six. Advance tickets 10 euros, over-21s only, closed Sunday. The Tao Club & Garden in the Jardines Alonso Quesada is the open-air alternative, though its website is currently in maintenance mode — worth checking before you go.
The third hub is Santa Catalina and the port area, which on Saturday already has the African Day Fest at Plaza de Canarias during the day. Chester Club & Lounge on Calle Simón Bolívar opens Friday 19.00 to midnight and Saturday 19.00 to 06.00, with nothing listed for this weekend. Add the El Tendedero de Catalina rooftop on the Bed&Chic and the Alis Rooftop Bar at the Hotel Santa Catalina; for singing, the karaoke pub Paraninfo Generación X on Calle Canalejas.
Four smaller live-music addresses are busy this weekend: Buenos Aires Jazz Café in Vegueta with Marcelo Sainz and Demian Domínguez on Friday and the Jam Session Argentina on Saturday, El Rincón del Bolero with Jesús Monzón and Yairis Rosa, Sala Canarias en Vivo with El Foco on Friday and the Gothic Rock Fest on Saturday, and the CAAM in Vegueta opening its JazzCAAM cycle on Friday evening.
Two notes. El Baladero in El Sebadal, otherwise the address for electronic subculture, still has nothing in its calendar. And Fortuni on Calle Martínez de Escobar, long considered the largest club in the port district, no longer has any maintained programme or opening information — its own site has been frozen for years. Call ahead if you are planning on it.
The south: Yumbo, CC Cita and the lifestyle scene
The Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés is the island’s best-known night-out address after sunset — four levels, largely LGBTQ+, open to everyone. The drag and cabaret stages run every night: Ricky’s Cabaret Bar on the ground floor with its show at 22.30, and the Sparkles Show Bar on the second floor with doors at 20.00, karaoke from 21.00 and the main show around 23.00 — for this Saturday it is the only venue in the centre announcing a double bill, first the Sensations dance troupe, then comedy. Add Chez Funny Boy’s on the big terrace, Buddies, Centre Stage and Terry’s. The evening starts on the terraces: Spartacus, Eiffel, Voulez Vous from 18.00, Gran Café Latino and Adonis from 18.30, and the Wunderbar, one of the few to publish a fixed weekly plan — Eurovision Night on Fridays, Retro Night on Saturdays.
After midnight the dance rooms on the fourth floor take over: Mykonos and Tubos from 23.00 to 03.30, Coco Loco on the boulevard, and last of all Mantrix, which opens at two and runs to six. The centre’s big room, Club Kiki on the third floor — the former Scala Heaven — has nothing announced for this weekend; its next dated events are in October. After two weekends of international bookings, this is a quieter round. If you want commercial chart music rather than drag or techno, it is next door at the Kasbah Centre.
The CC Cita sits in the heart of Playa del Inglés, a few steps from the Yumbo, and is the core of the south’s lifestyle and swinger scene. The largest venue is Swingers Club Secret in the basement on Avenida Alemania: a nightclub format with reggaeton and Spanish house, Friday and Saturday 22.00 to 05.00 and Sunday until 04.00 — it opens all week. Couples pay 20 euros with two drinks or 30 with four, women 10 euros, single men 70 euros, and for them entry is over-25s only and by reservation. Fun4all in the basement is the more relaxed option, with several playrooms and a BDSM room; sources disagree on whether it opens on Sundays, so call first. HOTSPOT Gran Canaria on the second floor is more cocktail bar and meeting point than club, daily 20.00 to 02.00, no entry charge. One level down, the Comeback Bar has no playrooms at all and opens from 20.00 — a place to talk. Then Plan B with its own dance floor, the sauna-club format Tantra (daily 21.00 to 04.00), the Lux Club in the basement from 23.00 to 04.00, closed Mondays, and the Majestic GC Swingers Meetingpoint, which includes Mario’s Bar. In the neighbouring CC Sandía, the former 2x2 premises now house Infinity SW: «Hot & Thirsty Friday» and «Indulge in the Night» on Saturday, both 21.00 to 04.00, Sunday until 03.00, closed Tuesdays; couples and women 25 euros, men 50, all including two drinks, a locker and towels. An earlier report that the venue was closed for the summer until early September no longer matches its own site. Everywhere in this scene entry is adults only, so carry ID.
Closely bound up with it, but a world of its own, is the cruise and fetish scene. Inside the Yumbo are the Cruise Bar on level two, running since 1994, Tom’s Cruising Bar next door, which works without a theme or a dress code, The Box also on level two, and on the ground floor Strong Construction, open 22.00 to 06.00, 10 euros with a drink. The most precise weekly plan belongs to NOXON on level two: «Wet & Piss» on Fridays with entry strictly between 21.00 and 23.00 and an enforced dress code, 20 euros including drinks; «Free to Play» on Saturdays with no dress code and «Daddy» on Sundays for a more mature crowd, both from 21.00 and with no entry charge beyond a minimum spend. In the lane behind the Yumbo Spar, The Factory occupies two floors, run by the former operators of the now-closed The Hole — this weekend «Hardwire» on Friday from 21.00 through to four and «Grip» on Saturday from 21.00, both 10 euros with one drink. The Zoo Men’s Cruising Bar at Avenida de Tirajana 17 keeps its fixed rotation: All Fetish on Friday and Saturday, Simply Naked on Sunday, daily 22.00 to 04.00, 10 euros. The Hell Club in the CC Jardín del Sol opens Tuesday to Saturday from 22.00 to 02.00 and stays shut on Sunday. And by day there is the Sauna Enjoy Maspalomas on Avenida de Tirajana, the only sauna in the south, daily 14.00 to 22.00, with a roof terrace and jacuzzi.
For anyone who would rather listen than dance, the south has its live-music bars. The Tipsy Hammock Bar on Paseo Costa Canarias runs daily from 11.00 to 02.00, house by day and DJs in the evening. In the Gran Chaparral Centre, Christopher Burke plays Bar De Lantaarn on Friday from 21.00; a few doors along, Al’s Bar mixes live music, karaoke and sport, with happy hour between 19.00 and 21.00. Café Mozart 2 in the CC Anexo II has the Sunday Frühschoppen from 11.00 with Christopher Burke, Detlef Cremer and Ludwig Stadlmair; the venue advertises live music daily, but no act is listed publicly for Friday or Saturday this time. Gio Box plays Café Bolle Jan in the CC Cita on Saturday at 22.30 and That’s AMORE in the Anexo II on Sunday at 21.00, and Restaurante «Que Pasa Tío…?» on Avenida de Tirajana runs its weekly karaoke from 19.00 on Saturday. On the water, Dunes & Tunes on the Maspalomas promenade and Café del Mar in Meloneras at the Plaza del Faro let the sunset do the programming.
And finally the biggest room in the south: the Oasis at Barranco del Águila in Maspalomas, running Saturday from 18.00 to 06.00 with Mëstiza and Arapu, from 25 euros through Xceed. Mamajuana Club in Meloneras, which had international house bookings earlier in August, has nothing announced this weekend.
