It is a landmark moment for sports tourism on Gran Canaria: the Anfi Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria 2026 has reached its participant limit for the first time ever — more than five weeks before the start on April 18 at Anfi del Mar. Organisers from Challenge Family have already activated a waiting list as athletes from across the globe continue to seek late entry. CITA News, your Gran Canaria news source, reports on the record-breaking event in the south of the Canary Islands.
More Than 70 Per Cent International Participants
The numbers tell a compelling story: over 70 per cent of registered triathletes are coming from outside Spain. Great Britain, Germany, Italy and France lead the international contingent. Athletes from South Africa, the United States, Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal and Switzerland are also confirmed. Around 30 per cent of participants are Spanish athletes.
The Anfi Challenge Mogán is recognised within the Challenge Family world circuit as the race with the highest number of professional athletes on the start list. Former participants read like a who's who of triathlon: Jan Frodeno, Patrick Lange, Alistair Brownlee, Sam Laidlow, Anne Haug, Nicola Spirig and Emma Pallant-Browne have all competed here.

European Season Opener for Triathlon's Elite
The Anfi Challenge Mogán traditionally opens the European season on the Challenge Family circuit. For many professionals and ambitious age-group athletes, Gran Canaria is the perfect place to find form after winter: average temperatures of 22°C, calm coastal waters for swimming and a challenging road network for cycling make the south of the island an ideal training base.
International professionals and amateurs have already begun arriving in southern Gran Canaria to train on the original course. Hotels in Mogán, Anfi del Mar and neighbouring Maspalomas benefit from the weeks leading up to the race — further proof that sports tourism has become a key economic driver for the region.
Mogán: From Fishing Village to Triathlon Destination
The municipality of Mogán in south-west Gran Canaria, known for its picturesque ravines, golden beaches and the sunniest climate on the island, has consistently positioned itself as a sports tourism destination in recent years. The Anfi Challenge is its flagship event, supported by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Mogán Town Council, the Anfi Group and the Canary Islands Triathlon Federation (Fecantri).
The fact that the race has sold out for the first time confirms the success of this strategy. Mogán is no longer just a hidden gem for beach holidaymakers — it is an internationally recognised address for endurance athletes seeking world-class conditions combined with Canarian quality of life.
