Operation Hermit: 700 Plants and a Processing Factory
The investigation began in November 2025, coordinated by the anti-narcotics prosecution service in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On 9 April 2026, the Guardia Civil struck. Officers from the UDAIFF (Fiscal Analysis and Border Intelligence Unit) and the Customs Surveillance Service raided a finca in the south of the island that was operating as a combined growing, processing and distribution hub.
The haul: 696 marijuana plants, one kilogramme of dried buds, 606 grammes of plant material, 1.4 kilogrammes of hashish, 211 pre-rolled joints, 9 grammes of rosin, 7 bottles of cannabis syrup and 1,500 euros in cash. One man was arrested — he was already known to authorities for prior drug offences.
What Is Cannabis Rosin?
- Production: A concentrate extracted from cannabis buds or hashish using heat and pressure — no chemical solvents required
- THC content: Can reach three times the level of regular marijuana, often exceeding 60% THC
- Consumption: Vaped, smoked or mixed into food and drinks
- Danger: The solvent-free process creates a false sense of "purity" — the real risk lies in its extreme potency
Why Rosin Is Alarming Health Experts
Cannabis rosin is not new — but its appearance in a local production facility on Tenerife signals what investigators describe as a professionalisation of drug trafficking in the Canary Islands. The finca was not simply a growing site but a full processing laboratory, transforming raw material into high-value concentrate products.
Medical professionals warn of significant risks. The extremely high THC concentration can trigger acute psychotic episodes in users — particularly those genetically predisposed to conditions such as schizophrenia. Reported effects include intense euphoria, severe cognitive impairment, spatial disorientation and acute anxiety or panic. Regular consumption substantially increases the risk of dependency.
Cannabis Syrup: The Second Danger From the Finca
Alongside rosin, investigators found seven bottles of cannabis syrup — a substance that had barely appeared in the Canary Islands before. It consists of cannabis extracts mixed with sugar or glucose syrup in a liquid preparation. The consistency resembles an ordinary drink syrup, which makes consumption particularly treacherous: dosing is virtually impossible, and the risk of accidental overdose is extremely high.
Unlike edibles such as cookies or brownies, where dosage is somewhat controllable, a liquid format allows no precise measurement. The consequences can include extreme sedation, rapid heart rate, panic attacks and profound alterations in consciousness.
Tenerife: Not Just a Transit Point, But a Production Site
Operation Hermit shows, according to the Guardia Civil, a development that goes beyond conventional cannabis cultivation. Tenerife is increasingly being used not merely as a transit point but as a processing site for premium cannabis products. The target market is primarily young consumers seeking faster and more intense effects.
The seized equipment — from specialised presses for rosin extraction to pre-packaged syrup — points to a professional operation designed to maximise profits. Buds were processed on-site into products with a higher street value rather than being sold as raw material.
The confiscated electronic devices are currently being analysed by cybercrime specialists. Investigators believe distribution was organised through digital channels.
Not an Isolated Case: The Arona Rosin Lab in 2024
Operation Hermit is not the first case of its kind on Tenerife. Back in 2024, the Policía Nacional dismantled what was then Spain's first rosin laboratory in Arona — also in the south of the island. Five people were arrested, including the main suspect, who was caught in the act of cooking the drug, as well as operators of several cannabis clubs on the island. The Arona lab used the bubble hash extraction method. The renewed discovery in Operation Hermit demonstrates that, despite the 2024 bust, Tenerife has established itself as a production site for high-potency cannabis concentrates.
