May 2026
Gran Canaria Events Calendar — Maspalomas Pride, Copa de la Reina, Día de Canarias
First Weekend: Fiesta de la Cruz
On the first weekend of May (2/3 May), El Ingenio, a village in the mountain zone of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, celebrates the Fiesta de la Cruz. Flower-decorated crosses, processions, Canarian folk music and food prepared the way it has been for generations. This is not a tourist event — it is the real Gran Canaria, 30 minutes by car from Maspalomas.
6–9 May: Animayo 2026 — Animation, VFX and Video Games
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosts the Animayo Festival from 6 to 9 May 2026 — one of the world's most prestigious animation festivals, now in its 21st edition. Animayo is Oscar-qualifying, meaning short films awarded here can be directly nominated for the Academy Awards. This draws international production studios, directors and emerging talent.
Alongside the competition, the programme includes masterclasses from industry professionals, studio recruiting events and a scholarship programme worth over 600,000 euros. The festival is aimed equally at professionals and newcomers — from students to production companies.

14–17 May: Eurovision Pride at Centro Comercial Yumbo
From Thursday to Sunday, the Yumbo Centre in Playa del Inglés turns into a pop and Pride festival with a political message. Spain pulled out of the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time since 1961, in protest at Israel's participation. The Yumbo Centre will broadcast the final on 17 May anyway — on a 60-sqm LED screen. The Israel performance will be replaced by an in-house gala number.
The four-day programme is run by Freedom Asociación. Concerts, drag shows, DJ sets, a Spanish mini-preselection and Pride theme parties draw thousands to the centre daily. Free entry for all open-air areas of the Yumbo.

16 May: Copa de la Reina — Women's Football Final at Estadio de Gran Canaria
On 16 May, the Estadio de Gran Canaria in Las Palmas becomes the epicentre of Spanish women's football. The Copa de la Reina Iberdrola — the premier cup final in women's football — is being held in the Canary Islands for the first time ever. The stadium holds over 32,000 spectators and is one of the venues Spain has proposed for the 2030 World Cup.
The Spanish women's national team currently holds the number one spot in the FIFA world rankings. Clubs like FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid or Real Madrid could feature in the final. The Federación Interinsular de Las Palmas secured the event for Gran Canaria as part of the federation's centenary celebrations — a historic moment for the island.

22 and 29 May: «La Isla de mi Vida» — Cabildo's new culture festival
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria replaces the Canariona Festival in 2026 with «La Isla de mi Vida» — a new two-part celebration for Día de Canarias. The opening takes place on 22 May in Vecindario: 650 schoolchildren from 15 municipalities perform the school programme. The main evening follows on 29 May on Plaza Santa Ana in Las Palmas — pasacalles from 19:30, gala concert «Attindamana» at 20:30.
More than 500 artists take the stage, including the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Parranda Araguaney and DJ Saot ST. The title «Attindamana» refers to the Guanche queen (Faycana) from Tirajana — an Amazigh word honouring a powerful historical female figure of the island. Free admission.

30 May: Día de Canarias
30 May is the Canary Islands' national holiday — the day the first Canarian parliament convened in 1983. Celebrations take place across the island: concerts, traditional dances, Canarian cuisine and cultural events in towns and villages. In Las Palmas, events centre around Vegueta and Parque de Santa Catalina. Many shops close, restaurants remain open.
Weekly Markets
As every month: Friday Puerto de Mogán (9 AM–2 PM), Wednesday San Fernando (8 AM–2 PM), Sunday Faro de Maspalomas (8 AM–2 PM), Sunday Arguineguín (8 AM–2 PM). Particularly pleasant in May thanks to perfect weather — 24C, no rain, no Calima.
LGBTQ+ Scene: Pride Month and Beyond
May is THE month for the LGBTQ+ scene on Gran Canaria. The Yumbo bars (Ricky's Cabaret, Sparkles, ConstructionBar, Dunas) run at full capacity. In Las Palmas, the scene around La Flamenca, Instinto and Distinto flourishes. But even outside Pride week, the infrastructure operates year-round — Gran Canaria is not a seasonal destination for the community, but a permanent one.
Nightlife and Lifestyle: The Entire South
During Pride week, nightlife in Playa del Inglés explodes. But for non-Pride visitors too: CC Cita (Fun4All, Secret, Comeback Bar, Black Bulldog, Before), Meloneras (Casino, Boulevard, Vegas Rouge), Puerto Rico (Shamrock Bar, Tiffany's, Barbacoa, Jokers) and Las Palmas (Vegueta, Triana, Mesa y López, Las Canteras, La Isleta) offer the full programme. Details on all bars and clubs are in our April events article.
Culture in Las Palmas
In May, Las Palmas offers: Mestisay & Los Sabandeños on 1 May at Teatro Cuyás — a homage to Canarian folk music. The XI Muestra de Teatro Popular runs from 7 to 10 May at Sala Insular. The CAAM in Vegueta has rotating exhibitions (free admission). And anyone visiting for the Copa final on 16 May can combine the trip with a night in Vegueta or Triana.
