With a population of 54,976 and just 2,972 registered unemployed, the municipality has reached its lowest level since 2006. For comparison, Telde, the third-largest city on the island, stands at 16.51%.
Since 2022, when unemployment stood at 14.20%, the rate has fallen steadily. That is a decline of more than three percentage points in under four years.
For context: Spain's national unemployment rate stands at just under 10%, its lowest since 2008. San Bartolome de Tirajana exceeds the national average but clearly leads the Canary Islands ranking.
85.88% of workers are in the general employment system, with 12.87% self-employed. Tourism, hospitality and services account for the bulk of employment in the municipality.
Structural challenges remain. Female unemployment is still higher, with 1,736 unemployed women versus 1,392 men. Among young women under 25, youth unemployment has actually risen - a warning sign that tempers the otherwise strong headline figures.
Maspalomas is consolidating its position as the economic capital of the Canary Islands. The combination of stable tourism, growing infrastructure and a diversifying economy makes the municipality exceptional in a region that struggles with structural unemployment.
