Why the Virgen del Carmen?

Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been the official patron of the Spanish Navy since the 18th century. On Gran Canaria — where fishing has been part of the island's identity for centuries — she is the second saint after the Virgen del Pino who looks out not for the whole island but for a specific profession: those who go out to sea daily.

The oldest documented processions on Gran Canaria go back to 1939. Today the Fiesta del Carmen is the island's most important maritime festival. Several hundred decorated boats in Las Palmas, a more familial atmosphere in the southern harbours, and the day on which fisherfolk and their families remember that the sea is not indifferent.

La Isleta — the loud version

In Las Palmas's harbour quarter La Isleta, the Fiesta del Carmen is a neighbourhood festival. In the weeks before 16 July there are concerts, folk evenings, bingo, fishermen's contests. On the day itself the procession starts in the afternoon at the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church on Calle Pelayo. The Virgin's statue is carried on shoulders to the Puerto de la Luz, where the decorated boat is waiting.

Hundreds of accompanying vessels, from deep-sea fishermen to small yachts, line up for the procession. The statue spends about an hour at sea, decorated with flowers, accompanied by a chorus of ships' horns and salute shots. The return is marked by fireworks.

Arguineguín — the quieter version

In Arguineguín (municipality of Mogán) the festival has a cosier format. The fishing harbour is smaller, the boats fewer, the wine simpler. The programme often stretches over a week around 16 July, with night-time concerts on Plaza Pérez Galdós, a parade by the folk group Las Marañuelas, the traditional «Subida de la Virgen» to the church, and the closing fireworks at the harbour.

If you're on holiday in the south and want one Canarian folk fiesta without mass tourism, head to Arguineguín. Global bus Line 1 from Maspalomas, about 20 minutes.

Puerto Mogán — the touristic version

Puerto Mogán, the «Venice of the Canaries», combines the procession with the appeal of a picture-postcard fishing port. The Virgin's statue passes between the small bridges and canals, followed by a procession of fishing boats and even a few tourist catamarans dressed up for the occasion.

If you come here, don't miss the eve concerts — the atmosphere on the water, with the sun setting behind the mountains, is one of those clichés that doesn't wear out.

How a maritime procession runs

The format follows a fixed pattern. Morning mass in the respective church. Afternoon or early evening, the Virgin's statue is carried out of the church — on the shoulders of fishermen and members of the cofradía (brotherhood). A brass band accompanies, along with folk groups in traditional costume.

At the harbour, the decorated main boat is waiting. The statue is handed over, the boat sets off, followed by the fleet. During the voyage, wreaths are thrown into the sea — for the fishermen who didn't return. After the return there are fireworks, then a folk fiesta with food, drink and dancing until late.
