What makes this month

July on Gran Canaria isn't simply «high summer». July is the month when all three worlds of the island run at once: the international pop stage, the regional festival tradition, and the high season of local patron-saint feasts. If you spend two weeks here, you can catch at least three major concerts and two folk fiestas without trying.

Four of these dates fall in the same seven days between 9 and 19 July. That's not a coincidence. That's the season.

Granca Live Fest 2026 — 5th Anniversary (2–5 July)

The biggest music festival in the Canary Islands celebrates its fifth birthday and stretches to four days for the first time. Estadio Gran Canaria, Las Palmas. Thursday opens with Ms. Lauryn Hill (seven-time Grammy winner), Friday brings Juan Luis Guerra and his bachata–Latin pop. Saturday is the Spanish block with Alejandro Sanz, Aitana, Dani Martín and Grupo Frontera. Sunday, the bonus anniversary day, closes with Maroon 5.

Three-day passes include Sunday for free. Single tickets for the Maroon 5 day will sell out first. Tickets via gclivefest.es, tomaticket.es, entrees.es.

Sting · STING 3.0 World Tour (9 July)

The former Police frontman brings his world tour to the Canary Islands — Gran Canaria Arena on 9 July, Tenerife on 10 July. His STING 3.0 format is a minimalist trio setup: guitar, bass, drums, plus Sting's voice. «Roxanne», «Englishman in New York», «Fields of Gold», «Shape of My Heart» — the classics in stripped-back, intimate form.

Tickets via entradas.com. Promoted by Faltos de Ideas with New Event. It's his second visit to the island — the first, with the OFGC, is still remembered by many Las Palmas fans as a legendary summer evening.

Fiesta del Carmen — Patron of Fishermen (16 July)

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of Spain's sailors and fishermen — and 16 July is her day. On Gran Canaria she is celebrated most strongly in three places: Barrio de La Isleta (Las Palmas), Arguineguín and Puerto Mogán. The festivities can run for up to a week.

The central image: the dressed-up statue of the Virgin is carried on shoulders a short distance from the harbour to the parish church, in a corridor of decorated fishing boats that afterwards sail out to sea with her. If you love folk fiestas in Spanish fishing villages, set aside this day. Several hundred boats in Las Palmas, a more relaxed atmosphere in the southern harbours.

Maspalomas Soul Festival (17–19 July)

Three days of soul barefoot in the sand — on the beach at San Agustín, San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Free entry. This is Spain's biggest soul festival, and 2026 marks its 10th anniversary. Organised by the city council with production firm DD&Company under Dania Dévora.

The concept is simple and works: a stage right by the sea, a food-truck area, a chill-out zone with DJ, international and national soul acts from late afternoon onwards. The 2026 line-up will likely be announced in full shortly before the festival. Admission: free. Tip: come by bus or taxi (parking is the main problem).

Jacob Collier & Philharmonic (21 July)

The 35th edition of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más brings Jacob Collier back to the island. The British musician (born 1994) is a seven-time Grammy winner and one of the most singular multi-instrumentalists of our time. At the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus he plays with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, conducted by Suzie Collier. A second concert follows at the Auditorio de Tenerife on 22 July.

Tickets from 27 February via canariasjazz.com and the usual Auditorio Alfredo Kraus channels. The festival also runs free open-air concerts in parallel — those are usually published shortly before the festival.

San Bartolomé Apóstol (25 July)

While the tourist coast sweats under sunscreen, Tunte — the mountain village behind Maspalomas, officially San Bartolomé de Tirajana — celebrates its patron saint. The Apostle Bartholomew is carried in procession through the streets, folk groups dance, fireworks light the evening, and the plaza in front of the church fills with locals and the few tourists who have made it up.

It's an insider experience and one of the days when you most clearly see the «two islands» — the touristy south coast and the traditional mountain hinterland. Car or hire car recommended; buses run, but rarely.

Spencer Tunick «GRAN SPECTRUM» — Culture & Business Pride 2026 (26 July)

The New York artist Spencer Tunick, world-famous for his mass nude installations, comes to Gran Canaria on 26 July 2026. The work is called «GRAN SPECTRUM»: hundreds of volunteers will use their bodies to form the colours of the LGTBIQA+ flags — rainbow, trans, non-binary, the full spectrum. The action is part of the festival Culture & Business Pride 2026, backed by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and Canary Islands Tourism.

Tunick has worked in more than 100 cities — from Mexico City (18,000 participants, his record) to Amsterdam, Sydney and London. «GRAN SPECTRUM» will be one of his larger European pieces. The framing is explicitly political: a counterweight to the «global rollback» of LGTBIQA+ rights. Spain ranks first on the 2026 ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map.

Registration is open from age 18, free of charge. Participants receive a limited-edition photograph of the action. Exact location and time will be released only shortly before the event — standard practice for Tunick works.

The Burning of the Banana — Bañaderos (July)

A giant paper banana is carried in procession through the coastal village of Bañaderos (municipality of Arucas, north of the island), and burnt with fireworks at the end. This is one of Gran Canaria's quirkiest summer festivals — the neighbours come dressed in white with yellow scarves, brass bands accompany, the ending is a huge beach party.

The exact date shifts year to year and is usually announced at short notice by the Ayuntamiento Arucas. For 2026 not yet confirmed; check local sources.

How to plan the month

If you're on the island for two weeks in July and you like concerts, you can — with a bit of luck — combine the Granca Live Fest 3-day pass (Maroon 5 Sunday free), the Sting concert on 9 July and the Soul Festival on 17–19 July. In between you can slot the fishermen's procession on 16 July and the Jacob Collier concert on 21 July — the densest festival window of the Canarian year.

Hotels in Las Palmas and Maspalomas are regularly fully booked in the second and third week of July. If you have Granca tickets, reserve a room by April. Hotels in San Agustín fill up during Soul Festival weeks — Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés remain larger alternatives.
