Maspalomas is in full carnival mode — and southern Gran Canaria can barely catch its breath. Since March 10, the Carnaval Internacional de Maspalomas has been turning the tourist zones around Playa del Inglés into a riot of colour, music and costumes under the theme "El Mundo del Circo" (The World of the Circus). Officially recognised as a "Festival of Tourist Interest of the Canary Islands," the event draws tens of thousands of visitors from around the world every year — and the 2026 edition is already surpassing all expectations. CITA News, your Gran Canaria news source, reports live from the biggest spring event on the Canary Islands.

Drag Queen Gala: 1,000 Tickets Gone in 60 Seconds

The clearest sign of this carnival's extraordinary popularity came with the ticket release for the Drag Queen Gala on March 19. The San Bartolomé de Tirajana town council made 1,000 free tickets available — 500 online via entradascanarias.com and 500 in person at the Yumbo Shopping Centre. The result was staggering: online tickets disappeared within one minute flat. The queue at Yumbo dissolved in under 30 minutes. Some fans had camped out overnight to secure their spot.

Twelve finalists will compete on the main stage on Thursday evening, including Hefesto, Sequins, Acrux, Eiko, Yshia Taisma, and Avalon. The Drag Queen Gala originated in Maspalomas in 1986 — initially called the "Miss Trevestikarnatival Election" — before later being adopted by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as well.

A Circus-Themed Stage of Superlatives at Yumbo

At the heart of the Yumbo Shopping Centre stands a stage that takes the circus theme literally: 30 metres wide, 12 metres tall and 13 metres deep, designed by set designer Cristian Rodríguez, who has been responsible for the carnival's scenography since 2017. The circular motif runs through every element — from an aerial view of a circus tent to acrobat silhouettes. Low-energy LED screens reinforce the event's sustainability credentials.

The opening gala on March 11 introduced all 36 participants: six Gran Dama contenders, eight children competing for the Trono Infantil, ten candidates for the Reina title, and twelve Drag Queens. The Gran Dama gala took place on March 12, with the children's pageant following on Friday evening.

The absolute highlight of the carnival is the Gran Cabalgata on Saturday, March 21. From 17:00, elaborately decorated floats, dance troupes and costumed crowds will parade through the main tourist streets of Playa del Inglés — from Avenida de Italia along Avenida de Gran Canaria to Avenida Touroperador TUI near the Maspalomas Lighthouse. The route stretches several kilometres, transforming the entire resort area into one enormous street party.

New this year: the town council has tightened safety regulations. Glass containers are banned, pyrotechnics and open flames on floats are prohibited, and float registration now requires the digital platform GESTICAB. Every carroza must carry liability insurance of at least €300,000.

Carnival as an Economic Engine for Southern Gran Canaria

The Maspalomas Carnival is far more than a party. As an officially recognised "Festival of Tourist Interest" of the Canary Islands, it represents a major economic driver for the south of Gran Canaria. Hotels in Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas report occupancy rates above 90 per cent during the carnival period. Restaurants, bars and retailers all benefit from the international wave of visitors.

The mogollones — the legendary late-night street parties — take place every Friday and Saturday until the early hours. Entry is free, the atmosphere unforgettable. For anyone considering Maspalomas as a travel destination, March offers the perfect blend of beach weather (20–22°C), cultural experience and Canarian joie de vivre.
