Canary Islands: €2.5m for six business AI projects

Six business projects in the Canary Islands will share around €2.5 million to build artificial intelligence into the way they work. The money comes from the state-run Red IA and Red IA Salud calls, resolved by the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública at the end of August 2026.

The islands' share is part of a nationwide distribution of €180 million across 372 projects. Which six Canary companies won the funding has not been named in the announcements published so far.

What was actually awarded

According to the ministry's statement of 31 August 2026, the Canary Islands account for €2.5 million spread over six business projects in artificial intelligence. The award closes two funding calls: Red IA and Red IA Salud.

Across Spain the package totals €180 million and 372 projects. Of that, €130 million goes to Red IA with 300 selected projects, and €50 million to Red IA Salud with 72 projects. The ministry says the Red IA money comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF, FEDER in Spanish). The grants are administered by Red.es, the state digital agency.

Who is behind it — and who is not named

The responsible department is the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública, with Red.es handling the administration. This is not a Canary regional government programme: it is central-government funding that companies from across Spain competed for.

The names of the six Canary projects, and of the firms behind them, do not appear in the material published to date. Nor is there a published breakdown of how the €2.5 million splits between the individual projects, or how many sit on the western islands and how many on the eastern ones. Anyone wanting that detail will have to wait for the beneficiary lists from Red.es or the official award publications.

What kind of technology is being funded

Red IA is aimed, in the ministry's description, at technological development and at embedding AI in production processes. The application areas it lists include intelligent assistants, digital twins, advanced robotics, computer vision, cybersecurity and predictive systems.

Red IA Salud covers AI projects in healthcare, and according to the ministry spans prediction, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. One caveat matters here: that list describes the scope of the calls as a whole. It does not tell us which of those technologies the six Canary projects actually work on — the sources do not say.

What it means for the island business base

The scale of the individual grants is worth noting. Under Red IA, the ministry says awards range from €400,000 to €5 million per project, and 300 projects were selected from more than a thousand applications. Seventy per cent of the selected projects come from small and medium-sized enterprises, according to the ministry.

In an economy weighted towards tourism, where a large share of firms are small, capital of that order for a single digitalisation project is unusual. At the same time, comparison keeps the figure in proportion: the Balearic Islands received around €450,000 from the same distribution. No official region-by-region breakdown of the €180 million has been published, so the numbers do not support a ranking of the autonomous communities.

Can other firms still apply?

For Red IA and Red IA Salud, the answer is no — not in this round. Both calls have been resolved, and announcing the selected projects marks the end of the process, not the start of it. Companies noticing the money now cannot compete for this €2.5 million.

A further Red.es artificial intelligence programme worth €40 million has been announced. On the information available, no formal call for it has yet been published, and the descriptions in circulation point to it targeting associations plus technology and innovation centres rather than offering direct grants to individual SMEs. A continuously open line for larger projects, the CDTI's Express IA facility, is also cited — though that comes from a secondary source and should be checked with the CDTI before any application.

For firms that do not want to miss the next call: binding deadlines appear in the Boletín Oficial del Estado and in Spain's national subsidy database, not in press releases.
Watching the Red.es tenders page and the BOE grants search shows a call the moment it legally exists — rather than when it has already been decided.
Three things not to conflate: this €2.5 million is allocated, not paid out — disbursement normally follows project milestones and audited costs.
The six beneficiaries have not been named publicly; any specific Canary company identified with this money is, at present, unverified.
There are no official figures for jobs, timelines or economic impact attached to these projects.

FAQ

Where does the money for the six projects come from?
From the state Red IA and Red IA Salud calls run by the Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública and administered by Red.es. The ministry says the Red IA funds come from the European Regional Development Fund.
Which Canary companies receive the funding?
That has not been published. The available announcements name neither the firms nor the projects, and give no split of the €2.5 million between them.
Has the money already been paid out?
No. The announcement describes an allocation under calls that have now been resolved. When and in what instalments payment follows is not stated in the available material.
What do these grants pay for?
Red IA supports embedding AI in production processes — intelligent assistants, digital twins, robotics, computer vision, cybersecurity or predictive systems. Red IA Salud supports AI in healthcare.
Can other Canary firms still apply?
Not for this round: both calls are closed and decided. A further €40 million Red.es programme has been announced, but on the available information no formal call has yet been published.
