What does the strike mean for patients and visitors?
The Servicio Canario de la Salud (SCS) covers both outpatient primary care and hospitals on all seven Canary Islands. The authority confirms minimum services, but reports no general closure of health centres or hospitals.
According to the available information, medical emergency services continue to operate for emergencies. Patients must check directly with their health centre or hospital whether a specific appointment will be postponed.
Canarias7 reports possible appointment delays and effects on care. Éric Álvarez, chairman of the Sindicato Médico Canario, said that discharges could be delayed and emergency departments could come under greater pressure as a result.
This assessment comes from the union representative, not from an official absence statistic. No special arrangement for foreigners or visitors has been published.
How many doctors are taking part in the strike?
On 27 October 2026, 256 doctors took part in the strike, according to the Canary Islands Ministry of Health. 4,132 of the 7,249 staff called out were affected.
Participation varies greatly by region: on Gran Canaria it stood at 203 out of 1,640 affected staff (12.38 percent). On Tenerife it was only 48 out of 1,943 (2.47 percent).
The previous day, 26 October 2026, 242 doctors took part. At that point 3,959 of 7,310 staff called out were affected, equivalent to 6.11 percent.
For the morning of 27 October, 1,378 staff were assigned to minimum services. The authority reported no significant incidents.
Why are the doctors striking?
According to https://rtvc.es/huelga-indefinida-medicos-canarias-16-octubre-2026/, the doctors are demanding their own representation model, changes to rest periods and better pay. The strike committee said the extension was prompted by a lack of negotiations and no progress with the health administration.
Gohar García, a doctor in the clinical analysis service at the Hospital Insular, criticised that doctors only get the following day off after 24-hour shifts. Other professional groups receive additional recovery days.
According to Éric Álvarez, pay measures can be implemented gradually. Individual measures could extend over eight years.
No specific euro amounts were given. Álvarez said the strike would not be suspended so that the SCS only negotiates afterwards.
What can be expected on the individual islands?
The official figures show a clear divide between the islands. On Gran Canaria, participation on 27 October was the highest at 12.38 percent.
On Tenerife it stood at only 2.47 percent. For Lanzarote, the authority reported participation of 8 out of 234 affected staff (3.42 percent) on 26 October.
For Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, no strike participation was communicated that day. However, that does not mean there can be no disruption there.
Minimum services apply on all islands. Patients should confirm planned appointments by phone in advance.
What remains open?
An agreement between the strike committee and the health administration remains open, as does the exact number of cancelled appointments. The final duration of the strike is also not confirmed.
According to the published announcement, the strike is to continue until 10 November 2026. Further negotiations or an earlier end have not been confirmed.
The official sources give no cost of the strike days and no number of postponed operations or consultations. No official absence statistic is available either.
Patients with urgent concerns should contact the emergency services. For non-urgent appointments, direct contact with the responsible health centre is recommended.
