What does the holiday mean for holidaymakers in the south?

12 October 2026 is a Monday, which for many workers marks the start of a long weekend. For holidaymakers in the southern resorts of Fuerteventura, daily life changes mainly when it comes to dealing with public offices.

Public administrations and offices remain closed, as reported by the Fuerteventura Zeitung. Opening hours for individual branches or offices are not stated in the official sources.

In tourism, hospitality and parts of the retail sector, however, normal working can continue. Excursions and private services can take place, but should be checked with the relevant provider.

Are shops allowed to open on 12 October?

Contrary to what is often assumed, shops on Fuerteventura do not generally have to close on 12 October. According to the BOC, the day is one of ten approved Sundays and public holidays for retail sales in 2026.

The full list includes 4 January, 2 April, 31 May, 15 August, 12 October, 2 November and 8, 13, 20 and 27 December 2026. Whether an individual business actually opens is decided by its owner.

There is no general obligation to open. Anyone planning a specific shopping trip should ask the shop in advance or look out for local notices.

What events have been announced?

For 12 October, according to Teneriffa News, two pilgrimages on Fuerteventura are among the events announced. In Puerto Lajas near Puerto del Rosario, a pilgrimage to Nuestra Señora del Pino is planned.

In Tuineje, a pilgrimage to San Miguel Arcángel is listed. The available event details give 11:30 for the pilgrimage; 18:00 is not confirmed.

Whether these events actually take place, whether roads will be closed and which municipal services are open must be confirmed with the relevant local councils.

Why is 12 October a public holiday?

The Spanish national holiday dates back to 12 October 1492. On that day, the navigator Christopher Columbus and his expedition reached an island in the Bahamas, as the Fuerteventura Zeitung explains.

The name of the holiday has changed several times. In 1918, under King Alfonso XIII, it was declared a national holiday as the Fiesta de la Raza. During the Franco dictatorship it was officially called Día de la Hispanidad from 1958.

Since Law 18/1987 of 7 October 1987, the day has carried the official name Fiesta Nacional de España. In everyday usage, Día de la Hispanidad also continues to be used.

How is the holiday celebrated in Spain?

In Spain, the national holiday is traditionally marked by a large military parade in Madrid. The official celebrations are usually attended by the Spanish king, members of the royal family and government representatives.

Various units of the Spanish armed forces and members of the security forces take part in the parade. On Fuerteventura itself, no island-wide programme of events has been published.

Alongside the national holiday, 12 October also sees the Catholic feast of the Virgen del Pilar. The Virgin of Pilar is, among other things, the patron saint of the Spanish Guardia Civil.

What applies in the municipalities around 12 October?

Fuerteventura's local holidays in 2026 fall on other days. In Puerto del Rosario, 7 October is a local holiday, as shown by the BOC.

In Tuineje, a local feast day in honour of San Miguel Arcángel and in memory of the battles of Cuchillete and Tamasite follows on 13 October. 12 October itself remains the national holiday.

Further local holidays are 9 February and 8 September in Antigua, 14 July and 24 August in Betancuria, 2 February and 16 July in La Oliva, and 2 July and 16 July in Pájara.
