Antigua on Fuerteventura: 17 days of festivities and a Ráfaga concert

Antigua, the inland municipality in the middle of Fuerteventura, is halfway through its patron-saint celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua. According to the town hall and matching reports in La Provincia and La Voz Canaria, the programme runs from 24 August to 8 September 2026 — described locally as “17 days of activities”.

The most talked-about date is still ahead: on Saturday 5 September the Argentine cumbia band Ráfaga is billed to play at 23:00. Here is what the programme has actually confirmed, what is only partly documented, and what makes Antigua worth a detour away from the stage.

24 August to 8 September: the shape of the calendar

The Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua are the municipality’s patronal festival. The official programme was presented, the town hall says, in the council chamber of the Ayuntamiento, and it runs from Monday 24 August to Tuesday 8 September 2026. La Provincia and La Voz Canaria both describe 17 days of sport, music, games and leisure for all ages.

The opening was deliberately low-key. According to the day-by-day version of the programme published by the listings site Canarias Fiestas, the first days were given over to tournaments at the seniors’ centre and social games, with the formal launch — the pregón, or opening address, followed by an open-air dance — falling on Friday 28 August. Anyone joining now still has the densest stretch of the calendar in front of them.

Ráfaga on 5 September: why the booking matters locally

The town hall calls the appearance of the Argentine cumbia group Ráfaga on Saturday 5 September the “headline concert”. Local media consistently give 23:00 as the start time, and a Canary listings agenda announces the slot as a “grand concert by Ráfaga and their orchestra from Latin America”. Before it, the town hall lists a tribute show billed as “Tributo a Mecamela”.

Ráfaga is not a Spanish group, despite the name: it is an Argentine cumbia band whose long-standing singer is Ariel Puchetta. For a rural municipality of roughly 14,000 people, a booking of that scale is a statement. Latin American cumbia has a broad, cross-generational following in the Canary Islands, whose ties with South America run deep. Whether the concert is free of charge is not stated in the sources we checked.

The traditional core: romería, offering and Canarian wrestling

The town hall and the fiestas committee stress that the traditional acts have been reinforced. Those named include the comida de hermandad (a communal meal), the romería — a pilgrimage procession in traditional dress — the ofrenda or offering to the Virgin, a tribute to lucha canaria (Canarian wrestling), an escala en hi-fi, a rally and fireworks.

The escala en hi-fi appears in the reproduced programme as “Gran Scala-Hiffi Adulta: Antigua y sus Estrellas 2026” — a lip-sync contest in which neighbours re-stage famous performances, a fixture of village fiestas across the islands. An exact date for the romería and the ofrenda is not clear from the reports available, so the official programme is the place to check. Newer formats aim at a younger audience: a batalla de gallos (rap battle), extra sporting events and themed concerts in an eighties vein.

8 September: the patron saint’s day itself

The closing day is also the feast day. According to the programme reproduced by Canarias Fiestas, 8 September opens around 07:00 with a morning greeting and the ringing of the church bells. At 13:00 comes the solemn religious service in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, accompanied by the parranda Montejanana, and at 14:00 a toast of honour with the Banda de Agaete. At 19:00 a Eucharist is followed by the procession around the square in Antigua, accompanied by the military band of the Soria 9 regiment.

8 September is a crowded date in the Canarian calendar. It is the Nativity of the Virgin, and therefore also the feast of the Virgen del Pino in Teror on Gran Canaria, the archipelago’s largest pilgrimage. Fuerteventura’s own island patron is the Virgen de la Peña at Vega de Río Palmas. If you want to combine more than one celebration, plan ahead — on that day half the Canaries are celebrating at once.

Getting to know Antigua: village, coast and windmill

The municipality of Antigua covers around 250 square kilometres in the middle of the island and had just under 14,000 residents according to the most recent published figures from Spain’s statistics office, the INE. Besides the main village it takes in Triquivijate, Valles de Ortega, Agua de Bueyes and the coastal resort of Caleta de Fuste, also known as El Castillo. The fiestas themselves centre on the quiet, agricultural village core around the church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua.

Also worth a stop is the Molino de Antigua, a restored windmill with a crafts centre on the edge of the village. The sporting side has already had its moment: according to La Provincia, the tenth edition of the Antigua Xtreme Race on Saturday 29 August filled its 150 places in about two hours — a fair measure of how seriously this municipality takes its sports calendar.

Tip: Antigua sits centrally between Puerto del Rosario and the south of the island, minutes from both the airport and Caleta de Fuste.
If you are heading in for the 5 September concert, arrive early and park in the village core — for late-night events in small municipalities, the streets around the plaza fill up fast.
Please note: whether the Ráfaga concert is free or ticketed is not stated in the sources we checked, so we do not claim either way.
Times and venues for individual items come partly from a third-party reproduction of the programme and may change. The official programme of the Ayuntamiento de Antigua is the authority.
