What happened in the night of 1 October?

Six people are said to have forced their way into a flat in Caleta de Fuste in the night of 1 October 2026. The couple lived in a partly abandoned residential complex in the municipality of Antigua.

The attackers are said to have kicked in the front door while the couple slept. They beat the man and stole several mobile phones and cash.

Both victims urgently needed medical help. The Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC), the Canary Islands emergency service, took them to the Hospital General de Fuerteventura for treatment.

The Guardia Civil says it has identified six suspected participants. Some of them are said to have lived in the same complex as the couple who were attacked.

How did the arrests unfold?

On 16 October 2026 the Guardia Civil moved in simultaneously across Caleta de Fuste and arrested four suspects. The men were in their respective homes.

The Unidad de Seguridad Ciudadana (USECI) took part in the operation. The intervention unit has only recently been established on Fuerteventura.

The Guardia Civil reported the arrests on 27 October 2026. The investigation files were then passed to the relevant judicial authority.

The four men are suspected of robbery with violence and assault. According to the information available, there is no conviction yet.

What does this mean for residents and visitors?

Nothing changes for residents, foreign nationals or holidaymakers: no new safety rules, fees, deadlines or access restrictions. No closures are planned either.

The reports do not include any official indication that Caleta de Fuste or Antigua as a whole is considered unsafe. The assault targeted one specific, partly abandoned residential complex.

In emergencies, the Gobierno de Canarias points to the European emergency number 112. For other police incidents, those affected should inform the relevant police force and secure evidence.

The four men are considered suspected participants. Until a court decision is reached, the presumption of innocence applies.

What remains open?

The investigation is continuing, the Guardia Civil said. It wants to establish the full sequence of events and determine the role of all six suspects.

Further arrests have not been ruled out. No date was given for further police or judicial steps.

The names of those arrested, the value of the stolen goods and the current state of health of the victims have not been published. There is also no information on possible custody decisions.

How safe is Fuerteventura?

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior publishes quarterly and annual crime data for Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands and Spain. The statistics cover robbery with violence, burglary and serious assault.

It does not publish separate figures for the municipality of Antigua. The case should therefore not be taken as evidence of a rise across the whole island or region.

Several security forces operate in the Canary Islands, including the Guardia Civil, local police forces and the Cuerpo General de la Policía Canaria. Custody, charges and further measures are decided by the courts.
