Which section is closed exactly?
The closure affects the southbound carriageway of the GC-1/AM. Specifically, it covers the 300 metres immediately before the Belén María roundabout, as announced by the Consejería de Obras Públicas, Vivienda y Movilidad of the Canary Islands Government.
In addition, Calle José Guerra Navarro will be closed. This street provides access from the GC-1/AM to the El Puerto health centre. The authorities advise planning journeys accordingly and following the signs put in place locally.
A full closure of the entire GC-1 or a closure of the opposite carriageway has not been announced. The measure applies only to the stated southbound section and the stated access road.
Which diversion applies during the closure?
Vehicles from El Puerto and El Sebadal can join the GC-1/AM via Calle Gran Canaria during the closure. The Consejería de Obras Públicas named this alternative route in its statement.
A separate arrangement applies to emergency vehicles. Access to the Centro de Salud de El Puerto during the works is via Calle Juan Rejón. This ensures the health centre remains reachable for emergencies.
The authorities advise all road users to allow extra time. Signage in the roadworks area shows the way.
Which construction project do the works belong to?
The resurfacing works are part of the project “Soterramiento de la Avenida Marítima y mejora de los enlaces Belén María-Torre Las Palmas”. The project involves putting the Avenida Marítima underground and improving the Belén María and Torre Las Palmas junctions.
Responsibility lies with the Consejería de Obras Públicas, Vivienda y Movilidad of the Canary Islands Government. The information is issued through the Dirección General de Infraestructura Viaria, which is headed by Rosana Melián.
The project normally provides for two lanes in each direction on the GC-1 and Calle Doctor Juan Domínguez Pérez. During individual construction phases, however, the number of lanes may temporarily be reduced to one in each direction.
What does this mean for residents and visitors?
For residents, foreign residents and visitors, this announcement changes neither prices nor application or payment deadlines. The practical impact is the overnight closure of the stated section and the use of the signposted diversion.
The closure takes place during the night hours between 22:00 and 06:00. Anyone travelling in the El Puerto, El Sebadal or Belén María area at that time should plan for the alternative route via Calle Gran Canaria.
The El Puerto health centre remains accessible for emergency vehicles via Calle Juan Rejón. For other road users, direct access via Calle José Guerra Navarro will not be possible that night.
Which further construction phases are planned?
No end date for further construction phases or additional closures is given in the statement from the Consejería de Obras Públicas. The works on the Belén María project are being carried out in stages.
New traffic arrangements around Belén María were already announced in May 2026. At that time, sections of around 500 metres in both directions were affected, without complete closures being planned.
The authorities announce traffic changes in advance each time. Drivers should keep an eye on the official statements from the Consejería de Obras Públicas.
How is traffic managed in the project area?
The project provides for two lanes in each direction to normally remain open on the GC-1 and Calle Doctor Juan Domínguez Pérez. During certain construction phases, however, this number may temporarily fall to one lane in each direction.
A temporary link from the GC-1 to the Muelle Pesquero roundabout next to the Castillo de La Luz has been set up for port traffic. The southern port access is open for light and heavy vehicles with authorisation from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 18:00.
The traffic management is set by the Consejería de Obras Públicas. The port access is additionally coordinated with the Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas.
