What AEMET forecasts for Tuesday and Wednesday
According to the forecast of the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, as reported by Canarias7 on 21 September at 5:00, Tuesday's maxima will change little or rise slightly. More than 32 degrees is likely in the south of Fuerteventura and on the southern and western slopes of Gran Canaria, where 34 degrees in places cannot be ruled out. For Wednesday, AEMET does not rule out 34 degrees on the southern and western slopes of Gran Canaria and in the south of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. On Tenerife and La Gomera, 30 to 32 degrees is likely. On all three days there will be calima, Saharan dust, at altitude, mainly over the eastern islands and on Tuesday over the central ones too. These are forecasts, not measurements.
The municipal forecast: Thursday is the peak
AEMET's automatic municipal forecast (issued 21 September at 7:19) goes beyond 34 degrees. Maximum temperatures in degrees Celsius:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lanzarote · San Bartolomé | 33 | 37 | 35 | 32 |
| Lanzarote · Arrecife | 32 | 33 | 32 | 30 |
| Fuerteventura · Pájara | 32 | 37 | 36 | 31 |
| Gran Canaria · Santa Lucía de Tirajana | 35 | 36 | 37 | 36 |
| Gran Canaria · San Bartolomé de Tirajana | 34 | 36 | 37 | 36 |

The nights will bring little relief either: for the night into Thursday the same forecast gives minimums of 27 degrees in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and 26 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Sebastián de La Gomera. AEMET puts the UV index at 8 to 9 through Friday.
Yellow warnings – and what they do not trigger
In the Canary Islands, three bodies decide separately. AEMET issues weather warnings under the Meteoalerta plan. On Monday morning, 21 September, it issued yellow for Fuerteventura on Tuesday and for Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the east, south and west of Gran Canaria on Wednesday, each from 11:00 to 19:00 local time; yellow is the lowest of the three warning levels. There is no warning so far for Thursday, the day with the highest forecast values, or for the western islands. The Dirección General de Emergencias ended its pre-alert for high temperatures on 17 September at 10:00 and had declared none by Monday morning. The health warning of the Dirección General de Salud Pública was green in every zone in its latest bulletin, of 18 September. On wildfires, El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria remain on the seasonal pre-alert under declaration 02/2026/INFOCA. Any of these can change with the next update.
Schools and the heat
On 15 September the regional education department, the Consejería de Educación, moved lessons online across Fuerteventura and in nine municipalities of Gran Canaria, including Telde, Mogán and San Bartolomé de Tirajana; in-person teaching resumed on 16 September. The basis is the department's heat protocol for schools, updated in May 2026 according to Diario de Avisos. It provides for cool rooms, less outdoor sport and more water breaks. Head teachers can also request early dismissal or a changed timetable; leaving early is optional, not before 12:00 and only with parental permission. By Monday morning the department had published no new instruction for this week. A petition on Change.org calling for "climate control and thermal adaptation" of schools has passed 6,000 signatures, Atlántico Hoy reported on 19 September. The same outlet reports that a parents' representative measured 42 degrees with her own thermometers on the uncovered sports court of the CEIP Virgen del Pilar school in Las Rosas, Tenerife.
Outdoor work, sport and pets
Since Royal Decree-Law 4/2023, employers must adapt working conditions, including shortening or moving working hours, when AEMET issues an orange or red warning and other preventive measures are not enough. This week's yellow warnings do not trigger that duty, which applies only from orange upwards, but the general duty of prevention still applies. The Servicio Canario de la Salud advises against sport between 11:00 and 18:00 and names people over 65, children under four, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses as particularly vulnerable. For context: the MoMo system of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III estimated 85 heat-attributable deaths in the Canary Islands between 1 July and 16 August, a statistical estimate, not a count.
