How is the education system in La Palma structured?
The education system follows the Spanish and Canarian structure. Educación Infantil covers pre-school; the second cycle applies to ages 3, 4 and 5. Educación Primaria is primary school with years 1 to 6.
This is followed by Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO), compulsory secondary education up to and including 4.º ESO. Bachillerato is the upper secondary stage. The private centre Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Santa Cruz de La Palma runs the general pathway up to 2.º Bachillerato.
The official directory identifies the provider of each school. CEIP San Andrés is a state school. CPEIPS Santo Domingo de Guzmán is a private centre for Infantil, Primaria and Secundaria. The educational stages are listed in the register as studies under LOMLOE.

Are there international schools in La Palma?
No officially confirmed, fully English-speaking international school along the lines of large British or IB schools is listed in the available Canarian official sources. The official education register does, however, list state-recognised centres and the educational stages they offer.
Families should search there specifically for centros privados, language profiles and foreign language provision. The term “international school” is sometimes used online for language schools, private education providers or extracurricular offers.
These categories are not automatically equivalent to an internationally accredited school or a full-time English-language curriculum. Before enrolment, families should ask a specific school directly about language of instruction, recognition, curriculum, qualifications and fees.
What are Aulas Enclave and what support is available?
Aulas Enclave are special education units within selected centres. In La Palma they are listed, among others, in schools in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Llanos de Aridane, Breña Baja and Puntagorda. The official entries name the responsible support areas.
The official school profiles show that schools offer different educational stages and support services depending on their location. For children with special support needs, families should ask the responsible school and the regional EOEP.
The island’s geographically scattered layout has also encouraged Colectivos de Escuelas Rurales (CER). CEIP Los Campitos in Todoque belongs to CER Valle de Aridane and later feeds into IES El Paso. CEIP San Vicente is part of CER Santa Cruz de La Palma.
What changed in La Palma in 2026?
CEIP María Milagros Acosta García in Puerto Naos resumed classes in the 2025/26 school year after the interruption caused by the 2021 volcanic eruption. For the reopening, 55 pupils and seven teachers were reported.
The Government approved the roof cession in late November or early December 2023 (reported 1 Dec 2023). The roofs go to the cooperative Energía Bonita for 25 years.
The project runs for 25 years and, according to the Government, is expected to serve around 700 families. Around 100 to 150 families within a radius of less than 2 km are named as possible beneficiaries per site.
How should families approach school choice in practice?
The first step is to search the official school directory by municipality, type of school and educational stage. When moving, families should check the admission and enrolment deadlines for 2026/27 early. The Canarian education administration refers to its central page on Calendario escolar, Admisión y matrícula and the respective procedures.
Families should ask the school directly about language of instruction, available places, school transport, comedor escolar and required documents. Not all schools offer the same services. CEIP Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, for example, has comedor and desayuno but no school transport.
Where you live affects school choice. Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane concentrate more services. In rural areas, the journey to school can be longer or require family transport. State school is generally the most affordable option; costs for comedor, materials, transport and activities are charged separately.
