Who was César Manrique?

César Manrique was born in Arrecife on Lanzarote in 1919. After years in Madrid and New York, he returned permanently to the island in 1966.

His model sought to combine art, architecture and the protection of nature and landscape. Official tourism sources describe this principle as a combination of art, architecture and nature, and as a sustainable development model.

His influence is regarded as an important part of Lanzarote's cultural identity. The connection between nature and design that he promoted is linked to Lanzarote's later UNESCO status as a Biosphere Reserve, which was granted in 1993.

Manrique was a painter, sculptor, architect and environmentalist. He worked with the Cabildo (island government) and other local stakeholders to turn lava fields, caves and cliffs into cultural attractions.

Which César Manrique sites should you visit?

The Fundación César Manrique is located in Manrique's former home in Tahíche. The building was constructed within five volcanic lava bubbles and combines underground rooms, art and solidified lava.

The address is Taro de Tahíche, s/n, Tahíche. The house itself is considered a work of art in its own right; visitors can see living spaces, lava areas and works by the artist.

The Casa-Museo César Manrique is in Haría. Manrique used it as his home until his death in 1992.

The Mirador del Río is located at the Risco de Famara in the north of Lanzarote. Manrique integrated two underground domes into the landscape and incorporated a former coastal fortification into the project.

The Jardín de Cactus in Guatiza was created in a former quarry and was Manrique's last work on Lanzarote.

How much is admission and when are the sites open?

For the Fundación César Manrique in Tahíche, the available official tourism pages do not provide reliably readable current information on opening times and admission prices.

For the Mirador del Río and the Jardín de Cactus, opening times, admission, travel directions and possible access restrictions should be checked directly with the Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo or the Cabildo before visiting.

Prices vary depending on the centre, ticket type and residency status.

For a publication in 2026, prices, booking requirements, opening times and access restrictions should be checked again directly with the respective institutions immediately before visiting.

How do you get to the Manrique sites?

Lanzarote is accessible via César Manrique Lanzarote Airport. The individual Manrique sites are spread across the island and are usually reached by hire car, taxi or scheduled bus.

The Fundación is in Tahíche near Teguise, the Casa-Museo in the built-up area of Haría, the Jardín de Cactus in Guatiza and the Mirador del Río in the north at the Famara cliff.

For exact routes, stops and timetables, the relevant transport operators and municipalities are authoritative. Exact access may be changed in the event of wind, construction work, events or protection measures.

What rules apply in the protected areas?

For the Timanfaya National Park, Manrique designed the Ruta de los Volcanes through the Montañas del Fuego. The concept was intended to make the volcanic habitat accessible without harming it through unregulated visitor traffic.

Visitors should use only designated paths, drives and facilities. Leaving marked areas can be dangerous in volcanic protected areas and is prohibited depending on the zone.

Lanzarote was recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The status does not make every site inaccessible for development, but it does establish a policy framework that prioritises conservation and sustainable use.

Binding rules, prices, seasonal changes and travel information must be checked with the national park or Cabildo administration before travelling.

What remains open in 2026?

The official tourism pages were updated in 2026 and continue to list Manrique's works as central attractions of Lanzarote. A new Manrique museum clearly identified as opened in 2026 is not indicated in the available sources.

A reliably confirmed change to admission prices and opening times is also not indicated in the available sources. Visitors should therefore consult the official pages of the Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo of the Cabildo de Lanzarote.

Anyone wishing to visit several sites can use the Fundación in Tahíche as an introduction to Manrique's architecture and environmental philosophy. The Casa-Museo in Haría documents a different period of the artist's life.
