Can you go direct from the Canaries to Porto Santo?

Porto Santo is not a Canary island. It belongs to Portugal and to the Madeira archipelago, which also includes the main island of Madeira and the city of Funchal.

Many people in the Canaries mix it up with their own islands, because Binter Canarias serves both Canary routes and the route to Porto Santo. Even so, no direct connection from a Canary island is confirmed.

Comparison sites list pages such as “Binter Tenerife Sur–Porto Santo”, but we could not confirm a real direct flight. We also found no regular passenger ferry from the Canaries to Madeira or Porto Santo.

The trip therefore has two legs: first from the Canaries to Funchal, then on to Porto Santo. Binter Canarias flies the first leg direct in summer.

The second leg goes by air or sea. Anyone travelling outside the summer months should check connections and timetables with the airline first.

Which flights run from the Canaries to Funchal?

Binter Canarias flew direct to Funchal from four Canary Islands in summer 2026, as Diario de Avisos reported in March 2026. The flights ran from July to mid-September.

Anyone planning a trip for 2027 will find no timetable in the sources yet. Binter has not published a confirmed schedule so far.

Gran Canaria had the busiest service: in July and August 2026 Binter flew to Funchal eight times a week in each direction. Tenerife South had two flights a week and Fuerteventura one.

Lanzarote got two flights a week, up from one the year before. La Voz de Lanzarote and Gazette Life reported this.

The sources name no direct link to Madeira from La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro. Travellers there must first go through another Canary airport, and Binter has not described any connecting routes.

On price, there is only one past example: according to Madeira Island News, Binter advertised fares from 63 euros, for instance between Madeira and Gran Canaria. That was a promotional price for travel from 1 November 2025 to 28 February 2026, and current fares appear only on binter.com.

How do you get from Funchal to Porto Santo?

Binter Canarias has flown Funchal–Porto Santo with ATR-72 turboprops since June 2018, under a Portuguese public service obligation. Madeira sources speak of two flights a day.

Visit Madeira puts the flight time at about 15 minutes. Other sources say 20 to 25 minutes.

Departure times of 07:30 and 18:30 from Funchal, and 08:30 and 19:30 from Porto Santo, are in circulation. They come from an older report in the newspaper dnoticias and are not confirmed for 2026.

Only binter.com gives current times and prices. Prices on comparison sites are not binding fares.

Hosteltur wrote that travellers could make a free stopover in Madeira of up to seven days. Whether that rule still applies is not confirmed, so check with Binter before booking.

The Madeira–Porto Santo flight is a Portuguese domestic flight. It brings no extra entry formalities.

According to Visit Madeira, the Lobo Marinho ferry of Porto Santo Line takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Visit Madeira lists the company’s phone number as +351 291 210 300.

Porto Santo Line offers a day trip from Funchal, with a morning departure and an evening return, from 58.90 euros. The page gives no year.

What is the beach like on Porto Santo and when does the ferry run?

The beach is the main reason to go: Porto Santo Line describes it as a nine-kilometre sandy beach. It puts the water temperature at 18 to 20 degrees.

The long golden sand is said to have healing properties, but the sources give no proof. The whole island measures around 40 square kilometres.

The sources contradict each other on the ferry season. A report on faehren.net lists a daily sailing from February to October, while the comparison service Ferryscanner shows the route only from June to September.

Departure times differ as well. Anyone travelling outside summer is better off booking the flight or asking the ferry company.

No confirmed ferry prices for 2026 exist. Ferryscanner gives roughly 32 to 40 euros for foot passengers, while another portal quotes far higher ranges.

Both figures are undated and cannot be checked against each other. Only the prices on portosantoline.pt are binding.

We have not reviewed official climate data for Porto Santo, such as that of the Portuguese weather service IPMA. The IPMA is the authority for Madeira’s weather.

You can find current readings and warnings on CITA Weather (cita.news/de/wetter.html). AEMET, the Spanish state weather agency, also publishes them.

What is there to see besides the beach?

UNESCO declared Porto Santo a biosphere reserve on 28 October 2020, at the 32nd session of the Coordinating Council of its “Man and the Biosphere” programme. According to Visit Madeira, it covers 27,310 hectares, including Natura 2000 and other protected areas, and is home to more than 2,110 species, some of them endemic.

Pico do Castelo has a 16th-century fortress on top. Pico de Ana Ferreira is known for its prismatic basalt columns.

Hiking is limited to a few peaks. Porto Santo is therefore no match for Tenerife or La Palma.

According to Visit Madeira, Christopher Columbus is said to have lived on Porto Santo after marrying Filipa Moniz. She was the daughter of Bartolomeu Perestrelo, the island’s first captain and feudal lord.

The Casa Colombo museum stands in Vila Baleira, and a Columbus festival takes place in September. The bread bolo do caco is also said to come from the island.

The golf course, designed by Severiano Ballesteros, opened in October 2004. There are no official figures for 2026 on events, visitor numbers or local costs.

What should you know before travelling from the Canaries to Porto Santo?

EU citizens need a valid ID card or passport for Porto Santo, because the island belongs to Portugal and so to the Schengen area. According to Lonely Planet, Britons and Americans can stay up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa, but we have not checked either point officially.

Unofficial reports say the EES entry and exit system has been rolling out in stages since 12 October 2025. It is said to be fully operational across the Schengen area, Portugal included, from 10 April 2026.

We have no official confirmation. Anyone arriving from a non-EU country should check the current position beforehand.

The ETIAS travel authorisation was due to start in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to the official EU website as of March 2026. It costs 20 euros, lasts three years or until the passport expires, and is free for under-18s and over-70s.

Whether it already applies is not confirmed. The site travel-europe.europa.eu has the answer.

Anyone who takes Porto Santo for a Canary island and expects a direct ferry is planning wrongly, which is an editorial conclusion and not an official rule. Outside summer, do not count on the ferry.

We found no published visitor rules for the biosphere reserve. For a similarly quiet beach trip without leaving the Canaries, there are Corralejo and Jandía on Fuerteventura, or La Graciosa.
