What is cancelled in Santa Cruz on Sunday?
The Ayuntamiento (town hall) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has cancelled the Rastro on Sunday 1 November 2026. All council cultural, sports and leisure events that day are off too, Canarias Ahora reports, citing a statement from the city.
Anyone planning a trip to the capital for the Sunday flea market can stay at home. The Rastro normally runs on Sunday mornings, from about 08:00 to 14:00 according to the market portal mercadillos.org.
An emergency plan lies behind the cancellation. From 12:00 the Ayuntamiento activates the Plan de Emergencias Municipal (PEMU, the municipal emergency plan) for the whole city.
Which facilities close from 12:00?
From 12:00 the city closes all facilities open to the public. That covers sports halls, swimming pools, sports grounds, and cultural and educational venues.
The cemeteries also stay shut, so anyone who planned to visit graves must postpone. The statement does not list which other leisure facilities it means.
The report does not say how long the closures last. Anyone wanting to use a council facility should check the Ayuntamiento’s channels first.
What does the warning mean for visitors in the south?
According to Canarias Ahora, the rain warning covers the wider Santa Cruz area, the “área metropolitana” of Tenerife. The Dirección General de Emergencias (the regional emergency directorate) of the Gobierno de Canarias declared it from midday on Sunday.
The report does not say whether the south of the island is affected. It also gives no warning level and no expected rainfall.
The measures apply only to the city of Santa Cruz, and the report mentions no decisions by other councils. Anyone who had planned a trip to the capital, for the Rastro say, should move it to another day.
What does the city recommend?
The Ayuntamiento advises people to avoid unnecessary journeys and not to park near barrancos (ravines). It also tells people to keep away from walls, dilapidated buildings, scaffolding and other structures the wind can hit.
Doors and windows are best kept closed. People should check roofs, terraces, drains and downpipes, and the city says to avoid hiking and camping while the warning lasts.
For homeless people, the Centro Municipal de Acogida (the city reception centre) is opening 20 extra beds. A mobile unit is already approaching people on the street to give them safety advice and information on shelter.
How often does the weather halt services in Santa Cruz?
This is not the first time Santa Cruz has gone into emergency mode in bad weather. In February 2018 the city activated its emergency plan and suspended all council activities, and it did so again in June 2023 because of Borrasca (storm) Óscar.
In March 2026 the PEMU rose to its highest level because of Borrasca Therese, Diario de Avisos reports. On 19 March 2026 the city closed its outdoor facilities at 08:00.
The roles are clear. The Gobierno de Canarias declares Prealarma, Alarma and Alarma máxima, while the city decides on cancellations itself and activates its PEMU in coordination with the regional emergency directorate.
Why has the Rastro been criticised for some time?
The Rastro has stood on the Avenida Marítima since March 2025, having previously been at the Mercado Nuestra Señora de África. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez called the two proposed sites “the only ones that guarantee it can be held in full safety”.
Traders protested against the move and collected signatures for a return. They cite lost sales and a lack of shade, and the PSOE party took the issue to the city council.
On 1 July 2026 Diario de Avisos reported that the tender for the tents had drawn no bids, because three firms did not meet the conditions. Councillor Carlos Tarife announced a new tender, and the tents were still missing.
The tender for the tents had a starting budget of 268,254 euros. That figure is not the amount paid.
The next regular date would be Sunday 8 November 2026. The city has not said in the report whether the Rastro will reopen then.
