When October takes the edge off the summer heat but the evenings are still mild, the Plaza de Santa Ana in the Vegueta old town turns into an open-air stage for three days. Festival Sonora is exactly the kind of event worth heading out for in the evening: right in the heart of the city, free on the main nights and with a setting no concert hall on earth can match.
For anyone already on Gran Canaria in October — whether on holiday, on a longer stay or working as a digital nomad — it is an almost unbeatable plan: turn up, stand in the crowd, listen to the music and then wander through the lamp-lit lanes of the old town afterwards.
Vegueta by night: the city's finest stage
The Plaza de Santa Ana is the historic heart of Las Palmas: a long, laurel-lined square flanked by the Santa Ana cathedral and the old town hall, guarded by the famous bronze dogs. All around lies Vegueta, the city's founding quarter dating back to the 15th century — cobblestones, wooden balconies, little squares and bodegas.
By day the district is a place for museums and strolls; by night it takes on a mood entirely its own. Everything is within walking distance, the routes are short, and between concerts you can drop into one of the tapas bars. It is exactly this mix — music, warm air, old stone — that makes Sonora what it is.
Who is playing in 2026
In 2026 Sonora marks its edition around the festival's 20th anniversary — with around eleven concerts across three evenings and a line-up that is roughly 70 % Canarian artists. The festival grew out of a battle-of-the-bands contest, and its winners still take to the stage alongside the bigger names.
Confirmed so far are, among others: on Friday (16 October) a pop and urban night with Juseph, Barry B and Daniela Garsal, plus the emerging winners of the contest. Saturday (17 October) gets rockier — with veterans M-Clan on their anniversary tour, the rising Sanguijuelas del Guadiana and British trio The Molotovs. To close, on Sunday (18 October) there is a symphonic concert by Efecto Pasillo together with the Orquesta Universitaria Maestro Valle.
The full line-up is announced progressively on the festival's official channels — well worth a quick look shortly before your trip.
Free entry — how it works
The best bit first: on the two main nights, Friday and Saturday, entry is free. There are no tickets and no reservations — you simply come to the square while there is still room. „Until capacity is reached", as the organisers put it. So if you want to be sure of getting in, come early and treat the evenings as a relaxed come-and-go.
Sunday is the exception: the symphonic closing concert on 18 October is ticketed. The organisers list it in their programme on festivalsonora.com as an “Entrada solidaria” (solidarity ticket), and Canarias7 described it on 7 August 2026 as “con entrada” — with a ticket. The ticketing platform Entradas Canarias lists a minimum price of 20.60 euros for 18 October on the Plaza de Santa Ana; as of 27 September 2026 the night was not sold out. The proceeds go to Barrios Orquestados, a social music project that gives free music lessons to children and teenagers in the city's neighbourhoods. Two start times are on record: the organisers' programme gives 19:30 for all three nights, as do Canarias7 and Creativa Canaria; the Entradas Canarias ticket entry says 20:00. We have no source that resolves the contradiction.
How to get there and what to expect
Vegueta lies at the southern end of the city, right beside the Triana quarter. If you are staying downtown or by the city beach of Las Canteras, take one of the many guaguas (city buses) towards San Telmo or Vegueta; from the San Telmo bus station it is only a few minutes on foot. By car it gets tight on festival nights — the car parks around the old town fill up fast.
What you can expect is a relaxed, family-friendly open-air atmosphere: people of every age, stalls with food and drink, and again and again the view of the floodlit cathedral. No VIP airs, no vast site — just a city celebrating music on its most beautiful square.
