What do the Tacoronte figures mean?
The municipality of Tacoronte ended September 2026 with 1,712 registered unemployed people. That is according to a statement from the town council on 5 October 2026. In July 2023, 2,203 people were still registered as unemployed. The fall is therefore 491 people or 22.3%.
The figures refer to registered unemployment, not to an estimated unemployment rate. The underlying Canarian labour market data is published monthly. It can be broken down by municipality, age group and occupation.
The town council does not give an unemployment figure for August 2026. A comparison for the month of September alone cannot therefore be calculated from the statement. There are also no details of causes, employment rate or newly created jobs.
Who is particularly affected by unemployment?
Of the 1,712 unemployed people in September 2026, 985 are women and 727 are men. Women therefore account for 57.5% of registered unemployment. That is according to data from the Agencia de Empleo y Desarrollo Local, which is headed by Eduardo Dávila.
1,065 people are aged 45 or over. That corresponds to 62.2% of all unemployed people. 47% of those affected are classed as long-term unemployed. These groups continue to account for a large part of the problem.
The data also shows differences in part-time employment. 23.3% of working women work part-time. Among men the figure is 11.8%.
How is the municipality responding?
Eduardo Dávila, head of the Agencia de Empleo y Desarrollo Local, sees the fall as an incentive. “El descenso del paro nos anima a seguir trabajando, pero no podemos conformarnos,” he is quoted as saying in the statement. The town must look beyond the overall figure and ask who is still looking for work.
The municipality is planning a Plan Municipal de Empleo, a municipal employment programme. It is intended to improve coordination between administrations, social organisations, businesses and professionals. The aim is an “ecosistema de empleo”, an employment ecosystem, as Dávila calls it.
Dávila stresses that factors such as work-life balance, mobility, vulnerable situations or access to housing also influence the job search. Labour market and social policy should therefore be better integrated within the municipal administration.
Where can those affected find help?
Responsibility for employment and local development lies with the Empleo y Desarrollo Local office of the Tacoronte town council.
The statement does not announce any new support programme or individual benefit. There is no new application procedure and no deadline. Anyone who needs information about municipal employment programmes or job seeking can contact the office mentioned above.
Operational responsibility for job placement lies with the Servicio Canario de Empleo, the Canarian employment service. According to its own statements, the Gobierno de Canarias has signed an agreement with Tacoronte on the free transfer of a building for the local employment agency.
How has unemployment developed?
The monthly statistics from the Canarian statistics institute ISTAC show a longer-term fall for Tacoronte. In 2022, an average of 2,312 people were registered as unemployed. In 2023 the figure was 2,085, in 2024 it was 2,004 and in 2025 it was 1,803 people.
In April 2026 the figure stood at 1,825 people. The registered unemployment rate was then 15.21%. These figures come from the Estadística de Movimiento Laboral Registrado of the ISTAC.
The annual averages and the monthly figures are not strictly comparable. The figure of 1,712 refers to September 2026. It should not be directly compared with the annual values.
What remains open?
The town council does not give an unemployment figure for August 2026. The monthly development within 2026 also remains open. A breakdown by age, sex and occupation is in principle available via the Canarian open data catalogue.
The town council does not give a specific date for the next update. The next regular publication depends on the monthly labour market statistics. The Agencia de Empleo y Desarrollo Local wants to continue consolidating the reduction and improve the connection between jobseekers and businesses.
