What changes for visitors and residents in Tenerife?

Nobody reports any impact so far for visitors and residents in the south of Tenerife. There are no limits on flights or ferries, and nobody has announced new rules or deadlines for residents.

The situation is most visible in the port of Los Cristianos in Arona. On Tuesday 3 November the rescue boat Salvamar Alpheratz escorted a cayuco (wooden boat) with around 100 people to the muelle (quay), according to the emergency service 112 Canarias.

Nobody needed hospital treatment after the 3 November operation, says 112 Canarias. If you have booked a ferry or flight, check with the shipping line or airline, as no official notice to the public could be found.

How many people arrived in the first days of November?

49 boats carrying 4,587 people reached the Canaries from 1 to 6 November, the Canarian government reports. Of these, 35 cayucos headed for El Hierro.

On Friday 6 November, early in the morning, Salvamento Marítimo (the state sea rescue service) was at work. It rescued 854 people in seven cayucos.

By Saturday midday, 7 November, media reports counted about 255 people rescued on three boats. Two cayucos headed for El Hierro, while a boat with 53 people reached Lanzarote.

Why do the boats land on El Hierro, and what has Tenerife to do with it?

The route from West Africa, mostly from Senegal and Gambia, leads mainly to El Hierro. About 80% of boats reached El Hierro and Lanzarote this year, according to an analysis from 1 October 2026.

El Hierro has only a few thousand residents, so many arrivals go on to other islands. Reports say the authorities move many of them to Tenerife to free up places on El Hierro, and no source gives a figure.

Alpidio Armas, president of the Cabildo de El Hierro (island government), pointed to the coming opening of the CATE reception centre in Granadilla, in the south of Tenerife. He gave no date.

Ángel Víctor Torres, minister for territorial policy, said the logistics of the Plan Canarias are activated. They are meant to move adults and unaccompanied minors and to expand reception places.

What do the island and Canarian governments demand?

The Cabildo declared a “social emergency” and asks the Canarian and central governments for more staff and equipment. Armas puts the number of migrants on El Hierro at just over two thousand.

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canaries, announced a phone call with Pedro Sánchez and asked the European Commission for an urgent meeting. He has spoken with Vice-President Raffaele Fitto and demands recognition of the Canaries as an Atlantic external border.

Nieves Lady Barreto, Consejera de Presidencia (cabinet member for the presidency), wrote to Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. She demanded more Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil officers on El Hierro at once.

The Junta de Seguridad Estado-Canarias (security body of the state and the Canaries) has been requested since September or October. According to Barreto, there is still no date for it.

How does the surge fit the annual figures?

From 1 January to 31 October 2026, 13,327 people arrived in the Canaries in 160 boats, says the Interior Ministry. That is 5.5% fewer than a year earlier, when 14,099 people came in 231 boats.

The gap is closing, because the trend turned in autumn. By 15 October the drop was still 33.5% (8,970 against 13,491), and at mid-year 67.2%.

From 1 to 15 October, 1,837 people arrived, against 643 the year before. In the second half of October the figure was 4,357.

Nationwide, the ministry recorded 32,942 irregular entries. That is a rise of 8.9%.

What is still open?

A live-ticker report of 7 November mentions 457 further migrants in cayucos. Its origin and period are unconfirmed, and the figure does not appear in official data.

How many people have been moved to Tenerife and when the CATE opens is unknown. Nobody gave a date for the call with Sánchez, the EU meeting or the Junta de Seguridad, and official death figures are missing.

The Interior Ministry's next fortnightly report, for 15 November, should show the November figures for the first time. That date follows only from the earlier schedule.
