Which operators run ferries between the Canary Islands?
The main inter-island ferry services are operated by Fred. Olsen Express and Naviera Armas.
Fred. Olsen Express lists most inter-island routes with specific sailing times on its website. Naviera Armas is also a central operator in Canarian maritime transport; its routes and departure times should be checked directly against the current timetable.
Individual connections may be offered seasonally or adjusted. According to the operators, the port, departure time, vehicle carriage and resident fares are particularly relevant for reliable travel planning.
How long does the Tenerife–Gran Canaria ferry take?
The most frequently used connection runs from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Agaete in the north-west of Gran Canaria. Fred. Olsen Express gives a sailing time of around 80 minutes.
The route is served by the fast trimarans Bajamar Express and Bañaderos Express.
For Gran Canaria's capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Agaete is not the destination port. Between Agaete and Las Palmas, the onward journey must be arranged by road. The connection to Morro Jable on Fuerteventura, by contrast, departs from the port of Las Palmas.
Which ferry routes are there between the islands?
Fred. Olsen Express lists the following inter-island connections, among others: Tenerife–Gran Canaria in 80 minutes, Tenerife–La Gomera in 50 minutes, Tenerife–La Palma in 150 minutes and Tenerife–El Hierro in 140 minutes.
Further routes are Lanzarote–Fuerteventura in 25 or 35 minutes and Gran Canaria–La Gomera in around 2 hours 10 minutes. Gran Canaria–La Palma takes around 3 hours 50 minutes. For Gran Canaria–El Hierro, Fred. Olsen gives 3 hours 40 minutes.
The La Gomera–La Palma connection is offered with different times depending on the port and connection. The sailing times are indicative values for the respective sea route; port changes on Tenerife are not included in combined connections.
How does changing between islands work?
Not every island is directly connected to every other. For El Hierro–Gran Canaria there is no direct ferry connection, according to Fred. Olsen. The combined route first goes from Valverde or Puerto de La Estaca to Los Cristianos on Tenerife.
After that, the journey continues from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Agaete. The pure sailing time is given as around 3 hours 40 minutes; the entire journey can take around 6 to 7 hours because of the port change and transfer.
Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are not in the same place. For such connections, sufficient time should be allowed for the transfer between the ports.
How much do ferries between the Canaries cost?
The official Fred. Olsen prices show 12.65 euros without a car for Tenerife–Gran Canaria and 22.46 euros with a car. 19.70 euros is only evidenced in the available results as the cheapest booking price from a reseller, not as an official general entry price; 11.49 euros was not confirmed.
These prices depend on the fare, availability and conditions and do not represent a general standard price. Luggage, vehicle, seat, resident status and booking time can affect the total price.
The published entry prices are not guaranteed final prices. Non-residents, vehicles, flexible tickets, luggage rules and high-season dates can be significantly more expensive.
What should I check before booking a ferry?
For Tenerife–La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, the relevant port is Los Cristianos. For the fast Tenerife–Gran Canaria connection, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is used. On Gran Canaria, the fast ferry from Tenerife serves Agaete, not Las Palmas.
For travel with a car, motorbike or bicycle, the vehicle must be declared at the time of booking. Carriage depends on space availability and fare. Timetables may differ at weekends, on public holidays and in high season.
Before travelling, the departure port, check-in deadline, vehicle dimensions and the specific fare should be checked. The operator information is dynamic booking data; the details at the time of booking are binding.
