What changes for visitors and residents on El Hierro?
As of 7 November 2026, the sources give no new rules, closures or deadlines for visitors or residents. Officials have not published any guidance on how the public should behave either.
No restrictions on flights or ferries have been reported. Anyone travelling should still check their flight or ferry with the airline or shipping company, as usual.
Arrivals are most visible at the port of La Restinga, where the cayucos (large wooden boats) tie up. The village has about 500 residents, as reported when Valido made her demand in March 2025.
Lately, the transfers to other islands have been the most noticeable effect. On 25 October a ferry carried 471 people to Gran Canaria. The first reception centre (CATE) in San Andrés was almost full on 13 October with nearly 600 people, and social services are under strain too.
What did Cristina Valido say on 7 November?
Valido is the Coalición Canaria–Primero Canarias candidate for the Congreso de los Diputados (the parliament in Madrid) in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
She spoke of a fresh collapse of the reception systems on El Hierro. The state should meet its responsibilities, she said, and secure the resources needed for care and health services.
“We are tired. El Hierro is tired, Lanzarote is tired,” Valido said. In her view, the islands must cope with the situation on their own, without the state giving them proper resources.
Asked whether the state could send more people on to the mainland, she replied: “They can do a lot, it is their responsibility.” She also rejected the idea that the state could not have known what was coming to the island.
What exactly does Valido demand?
Valido wants more funding for Salvamento Marítimo (the state sea rescue service) and for the facilities that care for migrants. The central government should take a bigger share, she says, so that island institutions do not have to handle emergencies with too little money.
She wants the Canaries to have a say in Spain's agreements with the countries of origin. She also asks for information that would let authorities foresee arrivals earlier.
She criticised the state for not planning ahead, even though the technology now exists. The Canaries are the southern border of Spain and the EU, she said, and the state has sole responsibility for protection, surveillance and care.
That is Valido's view of events. The research found no reply from the Spanish government to her accusations by 7 November.
How many people arrive on El Hierro?
From 1 January to 30 September 2026, the rescue services say 7,179 people arrived by boat in the Canaries. El Hierro took 3,515 of them, or 48.96%, in 31 cayucos carrying 113 people each on average.
Lanzarote counted 2,133 people in 41 boats, or 29.71%. Together the two islands received 5,648 people, almost 80%.
In October, reports say cayucos reached La Restinga almost every day. On 22 October 285 people arrived in three boats, and on 24 October 252 people in three boats within 24 hours.
On 4 November, reports told of four more cayucos carrying 111, 125, 115 and 26 people. They had left Senegal five to seven days earlier, and nobody needed hospital treatment.
For the Canaries as a whole, the Interior Ministry's provisional tally counted 46,843 irregular arrivals in 2024 and 17,788 in 2025. There is no figure for El Hierro alone in 2025.
Who is responsible, and who pays?
The Cabildo (island government) of El Hierro said on 3 October 2024 that it has no powers over immigration. The Spanish government is responsible, it said, along with the Canarian government, which protects unaccompanied minors.
The Cabildo provides buildings to house people before they move on. How the costs for El Hierro are split is not documented.
On 31 August 2026 Valido told the Congreso's youth committee that state payments did not even cover half the cost of caring for minors. That is her statement, not a verified figure.
In 2024 the Cabildo asked for a protocol for immediate transfers to larger islands and a reform of the Ley de Extranjería (the immigration law). It also wanted Frontex deployed and more staff for Salvamento Marítimo, the Guardia Civil, the Policía Nacional and the Cruz Roja.
What happens next on El Hierro?
According to the sources, there is no date for a reply from Madrid. How many people are currently housed on the island has not been published either.
The Canarian government accused the state of neglect and cited 11 boats within 24 hours. It said it had received no call from Madrid, and the PP and AHI also urged Madrid and the EU to act.
Cabildo president Alpidio Armas (PSOE) said in a report dated 2 November that the island is at its limit. That report speaks of almost 3,000 arrivals since the start of October.
