Where do I apply for the NIE on El Hierro?
The Oficina de Extranjería en Santa Cruz de Tenerife (El Hierro) is responsible for El Hierro. The address is Avenida Dacio Darias 103, 38900 Valverde (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The office belongs to the Administración General del Estado.
The state portal for booking an appointment in advance, known as cita previa, is available online. The official directories list the office and the appointment platform. An appointment should be booked through this portal before visiting.
The Spanish National Police also names Comisarías de Policía and immigration offices as possible acceptance points for the NIE application. Whether the police station on El Hierro actually accepts the application and what its opening hours are should be confirmed directly in the official police directory before booking.
What documents do I need for the NIE?
According to the Policía Nacional, the personal application requires form EX-15, fully completed and signed. A valid passport or equivalent identity document is also required; copies should be brought along.
Applicants must explain the economic, professional or social interest they have in Spain. Proof of payment of the administrative fee Modelo 790, Código 012 is also among the documents. Where applicable, evidence supporting the stated reason is needed, such as a purchase, employment, business or contract document.
The official Spanish and English procedure descriptions list EX-15 and the proof of payment as the central application documents. All originals, copies and the proof of payment should be brought to the appointment. The office may request additional evidence if the reason for the NIE allocation is not sufficiently documented.
How do I book an appointment and how does the procedure work?
In the appointment portal, the procedure for Asignación de NIE or the corresponding immigration office service must be selected. Available appointments can change; a specific appointment therefore cannot be stated in general terms.
The Policía Nacional states a maximum processing time of five days from receipt of the application in the competent register. The decision should be delivered within this period. If no response is received, the application is considered rejected according to the official description.
Those who are not in Spain can submit the application through a Spanish diplomatic mission abroad. Responsibility then lies with the General Police Directorate or the competent consular office. A representative with sufficient power of attorney can also submit the application.
How much does the NIE cost on El Hierro?
The fee is paid via Modelo 790, Código 012. The Policía Nacional publishes the applicable amounts in its fee schedule.
The exact amount can change due to legal amendments. For this reason, only the current official form and the current fee list should be used before making payment. Non-administrative expenses such as photocopies, travel, representation or courier services may be added to this amount.
The available official results confirm the fee type, but do not show a clearly readable amount for the NIE allocation in the displayed schedule. A fixed euro amount should therefore not be stated without checking the current Modelo 790 form.
What is the NIE not?
The NIE is merely an identification number for foreign nationals. It is not automatically a residence permit, not registration as an EU citizen, not a TIE residence card and not proof of residence on El Hierro.
EU citizens staying in Spain for longer than three months may need to register their right of residence separately in the Registro Central de Extranjeros. This also requires a personal application with a prior appointment.
The NIE is allocated to foreign nationals who are connected to Spain for economic, professional or social reasons. Applicants must not be in an irregular situation in Spain. The reasons for the allocation must be stated in the application.
What alternatives are there if no appointment is available on El Hierro?
The legal framework is national and there is no special NIE for El Hierro. This means the number and the requirements are the same as on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma or La Gomera.
In practice, it may be sensible to submit the application on another island if an earlier appointment is available there and the office accepts the procedure. A representative with express power of attorney can also submit the application; informal permission is not sufficient.
Those who do not wish to travel to Spain in person can start the procedure through the Spanish consulate in their country of residence. It is important to distinguish the NIE from the TIE: the TIE is the physical card that proves certain residence or settlement permits. Obtaining an NIE does not mean obtaining a TIE.
