What is the NIE number and who needs it on Fuerteventura?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal, one-off identification number for foreign nationals. It is required when a person has economic, professional, social or other demonstrable interests in Spain. The Interior Ministry cites property purchase, employment contract, company formation, tax matters or inheritance as typical examples.

The NIE is not the same as the TIE. The TIE is the physical foreigner's card that documents a residence permit. An NIE alone grants neither a right of residence nor a work permit. It serves solely to identify a person unambiguously to authorities, banks, notaries and other bodies.

For tourists who are only spending an ordinary holiday on Fuerteventura, the NIE is normally not required. It only becomes relevant when a specific transaction such as a property purchase, an employment contract or a tax matter is pending. The number is valid throughout Spain, not only on Fuerteventura.

Where do you apply for the NIE on Fuerteventura?

In Spain, the application can be submitted at a responsible Oficina de Extranjería or a Comisaría de Policía. For Fuerteventura, the specific acceptance point must be confirmed with the responsible police office. Not every police station processes NIE applications.

The official sources of the Interior Ministry do not name a permanently valid NIE counter for Fuerteventura with a binding address and opening hours. Opening hours, the responsible police station and available appointment categories can change. A reliable statement is only possible from the current official appointment and authority information in each case.

The Spanish administration recommends a cita previa (prior appointment booking) for official procedures requiring a personal appearance. Anyone who cannot attend an appointment should cancel it. The state portal expressly asks users to cancel appointments that are no longer needed.

How do you reserve an appointment for the NIE?

The appointment is booked through the state portal for the cita previa de extranjería. The procedure to select is the allocation of the NIE on application. Depending on the authority, the designation may be "Asignación de NIE" or a corresponding category under foreign nationals' affairs.

When booking, passport or ID details, place of residence and contact details, the desired authority and the desired procedure must regularly be provided. After booking, the appointment confirmation should be saved or printed.

An appointment at another foreigners' office is not automatically valid on Fuerteventura. Before booking, it should be confirmed that the selected office on Fuerteventura actually accepts NIE allocations. Booking the wrong procedure type is a common mistake.

Which documents are required for the NIE application?

The Interior Ministry requires form EX-15, fully completed and signed, for the allocation of the NIE. In addition, the original and a copy of the complete passport or a valid identity card, travel document or valid substitute certificate are required.

Further documents are a written explanation of the economic, professional, social or other interest in Spain, as well as evidence or proof of the reason, insofar as the authority requires these. The fee form Modelo 790 must be completed.

In the case of representation, an express power of attorney is required, showing that the authorised person may submit the NIE application. For EU, EEA and Swiss nationals, additional electronic procedure options exist through the police. Availability depends on the specific procedure and the technical requirements.

How much does the NIE cost and how long does processing take?

The NIE allocation is linked to the state fee via Modelo 790. The amount actually payable can be adjusted by a statutory fee change. The available official sources do not state a reliably identified fee amount for 2026.

The current amount should be determined from the official fee form immediately before the appointment. Payment must be made in accordance with the requirements of the form. A payment receipt should be taken to the appointment.

The deadline is not equivalent to a guaranteed issue on the day of the personal appearance.

NIE, TIE and Residencia: what is the difference?

The NIE is an identification number for foreign persons. The TIE is the physical card that documents a residence permit or residence status. The EU registration certificate is a separate procedure for EU nationals who settle in Spain on a long-term basis.

EU citizens who stay in Spain for longer than three months must apply in person for entry in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. The NIE is shown on the registration certificate in this case. Separate visa, residence or work permit procedures apply for non-EU citizens.

Anyone living outside Spain generally applies for the NIE through the responsible Spanish embassy or consulate. Representation by an authorised person is possible in certain constellations, particularly for economic transactions. However, the authority can require a personal appearance.
