Which offices on Tenerife issue the NIE?

The Policía Nacional – Comisaría Provincial de Santa Cruz de Tenerife at C/ Robayna, 23, 38001 Santa Cruz de Tenerife is listed in the official directory as an office for foreigner affairs.

The Policía Nacional – Comisaría Sur de Tenerife, Adeje is located in Sector Cero, Parcela C.N.P., Las Terrazas, Adeje. The procedure “Certificados y asignación de NIE” is expressly listed for this office.

The official directory of offices also lists the Oficina de Extranjería en Santa Cruz de Tenerife at Calle La Marina 20, 38001 Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For immigration appointments there, the state system “Cita previa de extranjería” is linked.

The Policía Nacional points out that NIE assignment can be applied for in person at the Policía Nacional, an Oficina de Extranjería or a competent police station.

How do I get an appointment for the NIE on Tenerife?

For the personal visit, an appointment should be requested in advance through the state appointment portal. In the selection menu, the relevant procedure on Tenerife must be chosen; the available offices and appointments are shown by the system.

The appointment portal distinguishes between different procedures. For a pure NIE assignment, the appropriate procedure is “Asignación de NIE” or “Certificados y asignación de NIE”.

An appointment for a TIE, fingerprints, residence cards or other immigration matters is not automatically an NIE appointment. The selected office and the specific procedure should be checked in the appointment confirmation.

If in doubt, the office can be contacted by telephone in advance.

Which documents do I need for the NIE application?

According to the Policía Nacional, the completed form EX-15: Solicitud de Número de Identidad de Extranjero y Certificados and a complete copy of the passport are required. For EU citizens, the identity document may also be used.

In addition, proof of the legitimate economic, professional or social reason for applying is required. According to the official information, this includes property purchase or sale, an employment or business relationship, tax return, banking transaction, inheritance or company formation.

Proof of payment of the administrative fee Tasa modelo 790, código 012 must be brought to the appointment. The passport or identity document must be presented in the original for personal identity verification.

Documents should be prepared completely and legibly. Additional evidence depends on the stated reason.

How much does the NIE cost and how long does processing take?

NIE assignment is subject to a fee. The Tasa 790, código 012 must be paid; the Policía Nacional refers to its fee table and the corresponding payment form for the applicable amount.

As the fee can change, the amount should be taken from the current official form 790-012 immediately before the appointment. The payment receipt must be brought to the appointment.

The Policía Nacional states a maximum period of five days for a decision on NIE assignment from receipt of the application at the competent registration office. If no decision is communicated within this period, the application is considered rejected according to the official information.

The period is not the same as the waiting time for an appointment. It only begins once a complete application has been received by the competent office.

NIE, TIE or EU registration: what is the difference?

The NIE is the personal foreigner identification number. The Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión is the residence registration for EU citizens; this is not the same as initial NIE assignment.

The TIE is the physical residence card for certain third-country nationals; it does not replace the application for an NIE number. The NIE certificate is the written proof of the assigned number; mere NIE assignment is not a residence permit.

EU citizens who live in Spain for more than three months must additionally register as EU residents. The application must be submitted within three months of entry; the registration certificate then also contains the NIE.

The NIE alone confers neither the right of residence nor the right to work. It also does not automatically make someone a Spanish tax resident.

Can I also apply for the NIE from abroad or through a representative?

If you are not in Spain when applying, you can request the NIE through a Spanish diplomatic mission abroad. The embassy or consulate forwards the application to the competent Comisaría General de Extranjería y Fronteras.

A duly authorised representative can submit the application; the power of attorney must expressly authorise the NIE application. Additional costs may arise for certified translations, powers of attorney, copies or a private gestor.

For an actual stay of more than three months, the appropriate solution is not merely a separate NIE appointment, but registration as an EU citizen in Spain.

The official directories and appointment pages can change. For opening hours, available appointments and the current fee amount, only the linked state pages are authoritative immediately before applying.
