What happened in El Sauzal?
On the afternoon of Monday 2 November, a torreta eléctrica on Calle José Rodríguez de Siberio in El Sauzal caught fire. The blaze cut power to several streets in the town centre, El Día reports.
The old road Callejón del Cementerio went dark too. Mayor Crispín Mariano Pérez inspected the site with the Guardia Civil (the Spanish national police force), and found the fire already under control.
The mayor says the Ayuntamiento (town council) had already informed Endesa. The company's technicians are due to repair the equipment and restore supply.
What does the power cut mean for visitors and residents?
The outage hits the town centre, not the whole municipality. According to edistribucion.com, the site of the Endesa network operator, more than 200 residents had no electricity after 20:30.
El Día names no impact on the holiday resorts in the south of the island. Its report covers only streets in the centre of El Sauzal.
If you live in El Sauzal or have booked accommodation there, check the Endesa outage portal. The company notes there that its technicians are working on the fault.
By Monday evening, the report gave no time for the power's return. Nor had the authorities published any advice for residents.
What is still unclear?
El Día has not named the cause of the fire. Nor does its report say whether anyone was hurt.
Nobody has said when the repair will start or finish. According to the mayor, several streets are waiting for Endesa to step in.
No information on compensation for those affected has appeared. The number of households has not been published either, and the figure of more than 200 refers to residents.
Has El Sauzal had power cuts before?
On 26 March 2024, around 2,000 residents of Ravelo, Carretera General and San José lost power, Diario de Avisos reported. A high-voltage line between Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte had collapsed in Ravelo.
Power came back after 17:30, following several hours of outage since early morning. Mayor Mariano Pérez said at the time that heavy rain and wind made the repair harder.
The biggest recent cut came on 10 January 2025, when around 12,000 Endesa customers in El Sauzal, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria and parts of Santa Úrsula lost power, according to Tenerife Weekly. The outage began around 19:42, and Endesa expected power back around 00:30.
Endesa blamed the failure of a medium-voltage support point in Santa Úrsula, which was said to have been damaged earlier in a storm. According to the available reports, neither case has a proven link to the fire of 2 November.
Who runs the grid and what happens next?
Endesa Distribución owns and maintains the power grid on Tenerife. The repair in El Sauzal is now up to the company, and neither Endesa nor the council has given a date.
The Gobierno de Canarias once fined Endesa 10 million euros after the island-wide Tenerife blackout of 29 September 2019, according to Diario de Avisos. The El Sauzal case is far smaller.
Real Decreto 1955/2000 (published in the BOE, the Spanish official state gazette) sets the minimum quality of supply. Orden ECO/797/2002 defines the indicators TIEPI and NIEPI, which count interruptions of more than three minutes.
