What was approved on 5 October?
The Canary Islands government approved a multi-year spend of €70,011,128 on 5 October 2026 for the construction of the new courts building in Puerto del Rosario. This was announced by the Puerto del Rosario municipal authority.
The approval initially covers the preparation and tendering of the construction contract. It does not yet mean that building work has begun. The process is to be handled by the Consejería de Presidencia of the Canary Islands government.
The contract is to be awarded as part of an accelerated procurement in the 2026 budget year. The government did not give a specific date for the contract award.
What is planned for the new courts building?
The new building is intended to bring together the entire justice system of the Puerto del Rosario judicial district at a single site. The aim is a more modern justice administration as well as better quality, efficiency and capacity, according to the government.
The project provides for a building with around 21,000 square metres of usable floor space over six storeys. It is to contain rooms for the various court bodies and necessary services.
The future courts building is to be built on a plot of around 4,800 square metres. It lies between Avenida Juan de Bethencourt and the streets Antonio Espinosa and Lucha Canaria.
The plot was transferred from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura to the Canary Islands government, as the municipal authority explains.
Why is the project important?
The court bodies of Puerto del Rosario are currently spread across four different sites. According to the municipal authority, this fragmentation makes the running of the justice administration and the service provided to the public more difficult.
It also limits the possibilities for future growth. The new building is intended to concentrate the entire court structure of the Puerto del Rosario judicial district in one place.
Mayor David de Vera spoke of a decisive step towards strategic infrastructure. The investment of more than 70 million euros is intended to give Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura a modern facility.
When will construction begin?
The construction period is set at four years from the start of building work. The period only begins after the contract has been awarded and building work has actually started.
No specific date was given for the contract award, the start of construction or completion.
The municipal authority announced that it would continue to facilitate all necessary procedures within its remit.
What does this mean for residents and visitors?
For residents of Fuerteventura as well as foreign residents and visitors, no new fee, application deadline, access requirement or closure has been announced for the time being. The announcement also contains no changes to court proceedings or responsibilities.
The immediate effect is that the future infrastructure is to be financed and prepared for tendering. Once completed, the concentration of the courts is intended to improve access to justice and organisational handling.
However, no specific date has yet been set for these improvements.
Which points remain open?
The final tender text and the procurement documents remain open. The successful contractor and the start date for construction are also not yet known.
The date of entry into service is also open. Transitional arrangements for existing court sites have likewise not been published.
The government lists the project as “Edificio Judicial de Puerto del Rosario”. An official infrastructure page of the justice administration lists the project for Puerto del Rosario separately.
