Between food and drink stalls, open-air dances, folk music and a vast pilgrimage, this inland Gran Canaria town swells with locals and visitors alike. Here is a guide to the essentials, based on the programme reported by local media, for enjoying days that blend faith, tradition and festivity.

What the Fiestas del Pino are, and when

The Fiestas del Pino honour the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of Gran Canaria, whose devotion is centred on the basilica in Teror. The core programme begins on Friday 28 August, and the main day, the Día del Pino, falls on 8 September.

The run-up already sets the mood: a traditional Feria de Ganado (livestock fair) was held around 23 August, one of the calendar's most deeply rooted events. From there, Teror strings together religious, cultural and festive events all the way to the central day in September.

"En Pie": street art from 28 to 30 August

One of this year's big draws is "En Pie", the Festival Internacional de Arte en la Calle, which unfolds across Teror's historic centre from 28 to 30 August. According to the organisers, it brings together 105 artists and 28 companies in 43 free performances spread over nine stages.

Circus, theatre, dance and street shows turn the squares and corners of the old town into an open-air stage. Every performance is free to attend, designed for families and for anyone strolling through the town during those days.

The concerts at Plaza de Sintes

Plaza de Sintes hosts much of the music. On the opening night of 28 August, with food and drink stalls, the line-up features Andrea Rguez (Andrea Rodríguez), La Banda del Trópico and Son de la Isla.

The bill then continues with Security Social on 8 September (21:00), Symphonic Rhapsody of Queen on 9 September, Cali & El Dandee on 10 September, Tata Band on 11 September and Kilombo Improvisado on 18 September. In addition, 6 September brings the 34th Encuentro Folclórico de Gran Canaria, whose night closes with the "La Previa" open-air dance featuring La Combinación.

The Romería-Ofrenda and Día del Pino: the heart of it

The most moving moment arrives on 7 September: from 15:30 the Romería-Ofrenda to the Virgen del Pino sets off from the Castañero Gordo and winds through the streets of Teror: decorated ox-carts, traditional dress, folk bands and thousands of people coming to offer the fruits of the land to the patron saint.

The Romería-Ofrenda and the Día del Pino itself bring the fiestas to their close. It is a day of fervour and colour in which religious devotion and popular celebration go hand in hand in one of the archipelago's best-loved traditions.

Practical tips for visitors

Teror is an inland town on Gran Canaria, well connected by road from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. On the busiest days, and especially on 8 September, the town fills up and parking becomes difficult, so it pays to plan your journey ahead.

Public transport and arriving early are the best recipe for avoiding jams. And since the programme may be adjusted, the safest bet is to confirm times and venues in Teror town hall's official schedule before setting off.

Tip: Teror gets very busy on the main days, above all 8 September. Go early, consider taking public transport (the guaguas / buses) from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and bring comfortable shoes and water for the pilgrimage hours.
Please note: This is a partial programme, not the full municipal schedule. Times, venues and acts may change; always check the official Teror programme before you go.
