Which car hire providers are there at the airports?

Aena lists AutoReisen, Cicar, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, Record Go and TopCar at Tenerife Sur Airport (TFS); Sixt is not included in the current Aena list. Depending on the provider, the desks are located in the terminals.

At Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (TFN), Aena names Cicar, Europcar, Goldcar-InterRent, Hertz, Sixt and TopCar, among others. The airport is in the north, close to La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The south is usually the most convenient arrival airport for holiday resorts such as Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and El Médano. Anyone who lives in the north or arrives there often avoids a longer transfer drive by collecting a car at TFN.

Before booking, the excess, deposit, fuel policy, additional drivers, child seats, out-of-hours collection and possible late-return fees should be checked in writing. Actual prices vary according to season, vehicle class, rental period and insurance.

What does car hire in Tenerife cost in 2026?

Comparison offers for airports sometimes show teaser prices of around 6 to 15 euros per day. These should not be equated with the final total price, because deposit, insurance and fees may be missing.

A realistic budget for a small car for 3 to 7 days is around 25 to 60 euros per day including usual basic costs. Premium cover, automatic transmission, high season and young drivers can increase the amount.

What rules apply at collection and return?

The vehicle should be photographed all round at collection and any damage recorded in the handover report. The rental agreement, driving licence, ID and credit card must be kept ready.

Before return, the fuel level, parking location and key handover should be documented. Under the “full/full” policy, the car must be returned with a full tank; some providers also charge a service fee.

Third-party liability insurance required by law is part of the rental agreement. Additional cover for excess, glass, tyres, underbody or breakdown assistance is often optional and can significantly increase the final price.

Surcharges may apply for drivers under 25 or 30. EU driving licences are generally recognised in Spain; for licences from outside the EU, an international driving permit may also be required.

Which routes and journeys should be noted in Tenerife?

Tenerife has a dense road network with motorways along the coast and winding mountain roads in the interior. For a round trip, small vehicles are often easier to handle on narrow village and mountain roads.

Particular care is required on narrow roads in the Anaga mountains, in the Teno area and on access roads to viewpoints. Not every destination is suitable for large vehicles or inexperienced drivers.

Driving should only take place on authorised roads. Parking outside marked areas may be prohibited, particularly in natural areas; illegal parking is a common mistake in the national park or at viewpoints.

In the Teide area, temperature, wind and visibility change much faster than on the coast. For mountain journeys, warm clothing, water and a check of current warning and road information are essential.

When is the best time to travel for a car hire holiday?

The AEMET normals for Tenerife Sur Aeropuerto show an annual mean temperature of 21.4 degrees Celsius, average maximum values of 24.8 degrees and minimum values of 17.9 degrees. The mean annual precipitation is 132 millimetres.

For a beach holiday with a high probability of dry conditions, May to September are particularly low in precipitation at the airport location in the south. July averages 295 hours of sunshine and 0 millimetres of precipitation.

For hiking, spring and autumn are often more pleasant than the hottest summer months. This assessment does not automatically apply to the wetter north or the higher altitudes.

Calima refers to the arrival of dry, dust-laden air from the direction of the Sahara. Visibility, air quality and perceived heat can temporarily deteriorate; if authorities issue warnings, sensitive people should reduce outdoor exertion.

What alternatives to car hire are there?

TITSA buses connect the airports, Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and the main holiday resorts. For individual excursions, a scheduled bus or organised tours are often cheaper than a hire car.

Airport transfers and taxis are useful for a stay in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Puerto de la Cruz if the car is only needed on one to three days. This mixed option avoids parking costs and reduces insurance and deposit risks.

Organised Teide and island round trips are practical if visitors do not want to drive on narrow mountain roads. Bicycles or e-bikes are only suitable for short distances and not for all regions because of traffic, heat and steep climbs.

Ferries or trips to other islands should not be planned without written permission from the rental company. On La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma, hire cars are also useful for remote places, but the market is smaller and the road network is often more winding.
