Pinolere 2026: three days of Canarian craft in La Orotava

It is one of the fixed points of the Canarian craft year, and it lands this weekend: from 4 to 6 September 2026, the 41st Feria de Artesanía de Pinolere takes over the Museo y Parque Etnográfico de Pinolere, in the hills above La Orotava on Tenerife. According to El Día, nearly 200 artisans will be spread across 164 spaces, with 40 spaces given over to food.

Anyone who files Pinolere under "market" is underselling it. The fair is held inside an ethnographic park where traditional houses and pajares — the thatched working buildings of northern Tenerife's medianías — have been preserved. The theme for 2026 is wood, under the motto "Toca Madera".

What makes this edition different

The 41st fair puts the spotlight on the material that a large share of traditional Canarian household objects was made from. The motto, reported consistently across local coverage, is "Toca Madera. Maderas que guardan historias de pasado, presente y futuro" — woods that hold stories of past, present and future.

In practice that means carpentry, turning and furniture-making. According to Diario de Avisos and La Voz Canaria, the programme includes exhibitions on wood in Canarian heritage and on handmade Canarian furniture (mueble artesanal canario), plus workshops making cheese and meat boards led by master turner José Luis Santos, with support from Maderas Litorsa Tenerife.

The programme, day by day

Friday 4 September opens the park at 10:00 according to reports, with the official opening ceremony at midday. Coverage gives the general daily timetable as 10:00 to 20:00 across all three days.

Saturday 5 September belongs to Tenerife's carpenters. Fourteen craftsmen from La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos and La Victoria de Acentejo are due to be honoured. Also scheduled: the launch of the book "Celebración de San José. Memoria de 40 años", a performance by the Banda de Carpinteros y Familiares de la Asociación San José, and a folklore twinning between Pinolere's Parranda Chaboco and the Colla Sa Bodega from Ibiza.

Sunday 6 September is dedicated to Icod de los Vinos and its tradition of Las Tablas, with a guided wine tasting and live music to close the fair.

The setting: not just an open-air trade hall

Pinolere is a hamlet in the medianías above La Orotava, and the ethnographic park is why the fair has a different texture from a craft market in a pedestrian street. The site preserves traditional homes and working buildings, including the pajares typical of the area. The stalls sit among the very structures in which the techniques on display were once everyday work rather than heritage.

The whole thing is run by the Asociación Pinolere Proyecto Cultural, which has organised the fair for decades and describes its mission as keeping awareness of the craft trades alive through education and culture.

Forty years on, and the succession question

The fair dates back to 1984; La Orotava town hall presented the 40th edition in 2025. Coverage of this year's fair draws the contrast with the early days: back then the organisers had to lay on transport and logistics simply to get artisans up to a remote hamlet, whereas today Pinolere is somewhere makers from across the islands actively want to be.

A second thread running through the 2026 edition, according to El Alisio, is generational succession: who takes over the workshops, and how knowledge handed down over generations avoids being cut off. The wood theme and the tribute to the carpenters sit squarely inside that story.

Getting there, tickets and planning

A free shuttle bus is announced for all three days: according to El Día, the guaguas run hourly from Avenida Sor Soledad Cobián in La Orotava. The sources consulted do not give a first or last departure. They are equally silent on designated parking or traffic arrangements on the approach roads — and given how narrow the lanes of the medianías are, the shuttle is the obvious choice.

Advance tickets are 2.50 euros, sold according to localtenerife.com at the Tasca Orotava, and buying ahead also enters you into a prize draw. A different price at the gate, and any free-entry categories, are not stated in the sources we checked.

Practical tip. Take the free shuttle from Avenida Sor Soledad Cobián in La Orotava rather than driving up — the park sits in the medianías and the access roads are narrow.
Buying the 2.50-euro ticket in advance also enters you into a prize draw, according to localtenerife.com.
Friday morning, right after the 10:00 opening, is usually the calmest window for actually talking to the makers at their stalls.
Note: the price at the gate, any concessions and free entry for children are not stated in the sources we checked — confirm with the organisers or La Orotava town hall before travelling.
Exact shuttle departure times have not been published either, and programme items can change at short notice.
Pinolere sits well above the coast: weather and temperature can differ noticeably from Puerto de la Cruz.
