Which trails in Teide National Park require a permit?

The Parque Nacional del Teide lies on Tenerife and lists its official walking trails under names such as PNT 07 Montaña Blanca–La Rambleta, PNT 09 Teide–Pico Viejo–Mirador de las Narices del Teide, PNT 10 Telesforo Bravo, PNT 23 Los Regatones Negros and PNT 28 Chafarí.

For PNT 10 Telesforo Bravo, the trail from the upper cable car station to the Teide crater, a prior reservation is mandatory for all visitors according to Tenerife ON. An individual permit through the Tenerife ON platform is also required for PNT 07, PNT 09, PNT 23 and PNT 28.

For the remaining walking trails in the national park, the official information states free access without reservation. According to the published information, the permit applies both to the ascent and the descent.

How does booking through Tenerife ON work?

Reservations are made through the respective trail description on Tenerife ON. The official guidance states that slots are released on Mondays at 07:00 Canary Islands time.

Reservations open a maximum of 21 days in advance; 28 days is not stated for this rule. Before booking, the current trail page should therefore be treated as authoritative.

According to Tenerife ON, the permit is free of charge; the platform states that its own services do not charge a fee. The cable car is a separate commercial service, and its prices and times must be checked with the operator Teleférico del Teide.

What does a visit cost and what is not included in the permit?

According to the platform, Tenerife ON permits are free of charge. However, a cable car ticket does not grant access to the summit or to the regulated trails.

The current fares, timetables and booking conditions of the Teleférico del Teide must be checked on the operator's official website. The official sources available do not contain reliable cable car prices.

For travel to the site, only the current information from Teleférico del Teide, the transport company TITSA, AENA and the responsible park authority should be used.

What weather can visitors expect at Teide?

For the AEMET station Tenerife Sur, the monthly average is not 18.4 °C in January and 24.7 °C in August; the AEMET dataset found shows 24.7 °C as the August average, while the January value is not recorded there. In the AEMET data found, 295 hours correspond to July and 193 hours to November; a January value of 193 hours is not confirmed.

These values describe the airport location and not the conditions in the considerably higher Teide area. They cannot be applied to Teide itself: temperatures fall with increasing altitude, and snow, ice, strong wind, icing or reduced visibility can occur.

AEMET has used the 1991–2020 reference period for climate normals since January 2023. For specific activities, the current official warnings and park notices must be checked.

What rules and safety guidance apply in the national park?

Required permits must be applied for before the visit; spontaneous use of the named permit-only trails is not intended. The reservation must match the trail actually visited; PNT 10 and the four separately named trails are subject to different booking entries.

For hikes at high altitude, weather changes, cold, wind, UV radiation and physical exertion must be taken into account. The current park and Tenerife ON notice takes precedence if trails, the cable car or summit access are closed due to weather, safety or nature conservation.

Unused permits should be cancelled. According to Tenerife ON, anyone who fails to do so may be excluded from new applications for three months.

What alternatives are there if summit access is not available?

If the summit permit is not available or the cable car is closed, visitors can use permitted sections of the Roques de García route, one of the best viewpoints with a low access threshold, according to Tenerife ON.

Further alternatives are Minas de San José, the volcanic landscape around the cable car base station and the Las Cañadas caldera. The La Fortaleza viewpoint or other non-regulated trails listed by Tenerife ON are also options.

An official guided excursion or a visit to the Teide Observatory with organised stargazing are further options.
