Fuerteventura Moves to Cap Incoming Motorhomes

The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, wants to manage the entry of motorhomes and «vehículos vivienda» (camper/living vehicles) that arrive from outside the island. In an interview with the newspaper Canarias7 she says «es necesario limitar la entrada de autocaravanas y vehículos vivienda que vienen de fuera» — that it is necessary to limit the entry of motorhomes and living vehicles coming from outside.

For now this is a proposal, not an approved law: there is no defined model, no fixed figures and no start date yet. García stresses that the aim is to manage the island's real carrying capacity — not to impose a ban.

What Lola García is proposing

The core of the proposal, according to Canarias7, is a quota (in Spanish «cupo») for motorhomes and camper vehicles arriving from outside Fuerteventura. Vehicles owned by island residents would be excluded from that quota — the limit is aimed specifically at the inflow from off the island.

García names neither a fixed ceiling nor a timetable. Whether the quota would apply year-round or only in the high-demand months is one of the open questions still to be resolved.

How the system would work

Alongside the quota, García floats a system of prior authorisation and registration. Under it, the entry and exit date of each vehicle would be recorded, García told Canarias7.

The purpose: authorities would know at any moment how many motorhomes are on the island at the same time and how long they stay. That way the inflow could be measured against the island's actual capacity.

Capacity, not a ban

García frames the move as a question of the island's real carrying capacity (in Spanish «capacidad de carga»), not as a driving ban. «No podemos seguir asumiendo cada vez más presión sobre la isla» — the island cannot keep absorbing ever more pressure, the Cabildo president says.

The point, according to García, is to set the inflow in proportion to Fuerteventura's actual capacity. A blanket ban on motorhomes is not on the table.

Still a proposal: reports and competences

Before anything is decided, the Cabildo intends, according to García, to request the necessary technical and legal reports. They would clarify how such a model could work, which level of administration holds the relevant competence and how large the quota should be.

The council also wants to study the experience of other islands already grappling with similar questions. García deliberately gives no specific figures while those reports are still missing.

Background: camping ordinance and a contested summer

The move comes as Fuerteventura is already working on a provisional camping ordinance (Ordenanza Provisional de Acampadas, OPI) and is among the first islands to regulate camping and overnight stays in vehicles.

This summer the island has been debating illegal camping and overcrowding at coastal and natural areas. Against that backdrop, García says, managing the inflow has become necessary.

Practical tip. If you are planning to travel to Fuerteventura by motorhome, follow how this develops: a possible quota with prior registration would mainly affect vehicles arriving from outside the island.
Under the proposal, vehicles owned by island residents would be excluded.
Caution: This is a proposal, not a law in force. So far there is no defined model, no ceiling and no start date. All details come from an interview with Canarias7 and may still change.
