What changes on Sunday for visitors?
Anyone out and about on Fuerteventura on Sunday 8 November needs a plan B. Aemet has issued two yellow warnings, one for rain and one for thunderstorms, both valid from 12:00 to 23:59.
Aemet forecasts up to 20 millimetres of rain in an hour, which equals 20 litres per square metre. The report puts the chance of the rain and thunderstorm spell at between 40 and 70%.
The warning window opens at 12:00, so afternoon and evening are the critical hours for beaches and excursions. The report gives no details on the sea, waves or water sports.
In Puerto del Rosario, Aemet's local forecast for Sunday shows showers in the morning and afternoon, with a 65% chance of rain. Expect a south wind of about 30 km/h, gusts of 40 to 45 km/h and temperatures of 23 to 28 degrees.
Where and when does the low pass through?
The cause is Borrasca Bruna, a low-pressure system. It moves east across all the islands during Sunday.
According to the Dirección General de Emergencias (the Canarian government's emergency directorate), Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa may see intense rain of 20 millimetres an hour or more. The directorate does not expect lasting rain there, as on the mountainous islands.
Thunderstorms stay local, the directorate says, but can be strong in places. Strong gusts are possible locally, though the report gives no wind speed.
The Canarian government rates the uncertainty over where, how and how strongly storms will strike as high. There is no separate forecast for the southern resorts, as the available local forecast covers Puerto del Rosario.
What do yellow and pre-alert mean?
Yellow and pre-alert are two separate systems. Aemet issues the warning colours yellow, orange and red, while the emergency directorate separately declares situations under the PEFMA emergency plan, such as Prealerta (pre-alert) and Alerta.
A rain pre-alert applies from Saturday 7 November, 21:00, on Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa. For thunderstorms, the pre-alert covers the whole archipelago.
No closures are known. The report names none.
For comparison, on 14 December 2025 at 17:00 the directorate ended the pre-alert for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. A coastal alert for waves of 4 to 6 metres stayed in force at the time.
How should you behave in heavy rain and thunderstorms?
Official advice from 30 October, issued for an earlier weather situation, discourages road trips once rain starts. People should take particular care in low-lying areas and barrancos (ravines), and call 112 in an emergency.
Never park in a barranco bed, the Canarian government's general advice of 24 September 2022 says. It also says excursions and camping should be cancelled in bad weather.
In a thunderstorm, close windows and doors and unplug appliances, according to that advice. Outdoors, avoid isolated trees and metal structures.
The 2022 government advice also sets clear rules for the road: drive slowly, do not cross flooded sections and do not stop where water can run off. Call 112 for emergencies and 012 for information.
On Fuerteventura, the same list names 7 barrancos at risk of flooding, against 8 on Tenerife and 6 on Gran Canaria. The names of the seven barrancos are not available here.
What is still open, and what happens next?
Whether Fuerteventura will be upgraded is unknown. The warning window ends on Sunday 8 November at 23:59.
For Monday 9 November, Aemet's local forecast for Puerto del Rosario shows mostly cloudy skies. The chance of rain is 40% in the first half of the day and 55% in the second.
A south-west wind of 10 to 15 km/h is forecast. Temperatures reach 20 to 25 degrees.
The warning levels so far come from a single report of 6 November, 18:40. Wind speeds, sea state, warnings for Monday, damage and flight operations at Aena (Spain's airport operator) remain open.
On 2 November, orange warnings applied on La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, with up to 30 litres per square metre in an hour. Fuerteventura had no warning then.
Updates will come from Aemet and the Dirección General de Emergencias, which is monitoring the situation. That includes Monday, if warnings are extended.
