When and where does the orchestra play “Calling all dawns”?

The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (OFGC) plays “Calling all dawns” on 14 November in the Sala Gabriel Rodó. This is the smaller hall in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus complex in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the orchestra’s home.

The concert runs twice, at 11:00 and 12:30, and carries the category “Familiar” in the programme. Families with children can therefore choose between a morning and a midday slot.

The announcement gives no year, but the other family concerts on the same list carry dates up to March 2027. As 14 November 2026 is a Saturday, this year is probably meant, though that is an inference and not a statement from the organiser.

There is no travel advice. Anyone coming from the south of the island must plan the trip to Las Palmas alone, as no official guidance on traffic or access has been issued.

How much does the family concert cost, and how do you get tickets?

Nobody has yet published a price, age guidance or ticket sales for “Calling all dawns”. It is also unknown whether the two performances have already sold out.

At the family concert “El Circo de Don Nicanor” on 25 April 2026, a ticket cost 5 euros, according to the orchestra’s announcement. That is only a guide, as no source confirms the same price for the new concert.

For the 2025/26 family series, the orchestra sold tickets on ofgrancanaria.com and at its box office. An optional workshop before the concert cost 5 euros for each child taking part.

Families should check the price and free seats on ofgrancanaria.com or at the box office before travelling.

What will the orchestra play, and what is known about the work?

The orchestra has named no programme, conductor, narrator or performers for 14 November. Whether a workshop is part of the concert is also open.

“Calling All Dawns” is also the title of a song cycle by the US composer Christopher Tin, written in 2009. No source shows that the orchestra will play this music, and the same title is no proof.

Tin’s cycle has 12 songs in 12 languages, including Swahili, Japanese, Sanskrit and Māori. Its three parts stand for day, night and dawn, and so for life, death and rebirth.

The work won two Grammys in 2011, including the one for best classical crossover album. Tin wrote its piece “Baba Yetu” for the computer game Civilization IV, and it was the first Grammy for a composition from a video game.

Who is behind the concert series?

The Fundación Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria was founded on 30 October 1980 and belongs to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria (island government). The Cabildo funds the orchestra and decides its course; the chief conductor is Karel Mark Chichon, whose contract runs to 2027.

According to an orchestra statement of 18 June 2026, the 2026/27 season has 19 subscription concerts in all. It will be Karel Mark Chichon’s last season as artistic director and chief conductor.

The orchestra stages the family concerts together with the Fundación DISA, which its statements have named as a partner since 2019. In the 2019/20 season it gave 80 performances, of which 62 were school concerts and 18 family concerts, spread over 8 programmes.

Earlier family titles include “Tatakapum” in January 2024 and “Scheherazade”, which gained an extra performance in January 2025. “El viaje de San Borondón” and “Pompa” ran in 2023.

What other family events follow, including in the south?

On 7 November, a week before “Calling all dawns”, the programme lists “Érase una vez en el cine” (Once upon a time at the cinema). This concert also has two slots, at 11:00 and 12:30.

After that, the programme names family concerts on 20 February 2027 (“El viaje de Matilda”), 6 March 2027 (“Vicentillo, ¿valiente sastrecillo?”) and 13 March 2027 (“La jungla swinguera”). The details give no times or venues for them.

For those living in the south, the programme lists children’s shows at the Teatro Víctor Jara in Vecindario throughout the autumn. At the Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas, the Domingos en familia (family Sundays) follow one rule: each ticket covers one adult and one child.
