Four theme parks, eighteen family-friendly beaches, an aquarium, a fun park, an average 21 °C and water you can swim in all 365 days of the year. Gran Canaria is one of the few European destinations that actually works for every age group from babies to teenagers — and the only place where it works in February too. This guide collects the practical knowledge: what costs what, what works at which age, where to stay sensibly, and which mistakes to avoid.

Why Gran Canaria works with kids
Gran Canaria is sometimes called a «miniature continent» — a reference to the twelve distinct microclimates packed into 1,560 square kilometres. For families that means in practical terms: 24 °C and sunny in the city, an hour later 14 °C and windy in the mountains, desert dunes and pine forests in between. Anyone travelling with small children has a plan B twenty minutes away.
The island records 2,822 hours of sunshine per year, an annual mean of 21.1 °C, and water temperatures between 18 and 23 degrees all year round. The missing 40 degrees of summer heat is what makes the island family-friendly when mainland Spain is already unbearable. In February you land in a T-shirt and head straight for the beach — that is the core of the Canarian business model.
Add to that a tourism infrastructure that has been optimised for families since the 1960s: hotels with mini-clubs, beaches with lifeguards, bus routes with low-floor vehicles, free playgrounds in every municipality. Sileney Pérez Vargas, a CITA News reporter with three children of her own, sums it up: «With two small kids we'd rather fly to Gran Canaria than drive somewhere on the Spanish mainland — because here everything is within 50 kilometres.»
Theme parks: Palmitos, Aqualand, Holiday World
Four major theme parks share the family market in the south of the island. All four are open year-round, which is remarkable given the typical seasonal closure of European parks.
Palmitos Park, in a ravine behind Maspalomas, combines botany, zoo, aquarium, butterfly house and several animal shows (birds of prey, parrots, dolphins). Entry online: €35 for adults, €25 for children 5–10, €15 for toddlers 3–4, free under 2. The «Family Pack» (two adults + two children) is €118 online — €27 less than buying individual tickets. Open daily 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:00. Bus line 45 from Playa del Inglés, line 70 from Puerto Mogán. One note: Tripadvisor does not book Palmitos tickets because the park does not meet its animal welfare guidelines — a discussion parents should weigh up for themselves.
Aqualand Maspalomas is Europe's fourth-largest water park — 33 slides, several wave pools, a lazy river, a dedicated children's area called «Children's Paradise» and the pirate-themed «Skull Bay». Entry online: €32 adults, €22 children, €17 toddlers. Family Pack from €106. Open daily 10:00–17:00. Warning: parking is €5 extra, lockers €7, sun loungers €5. If you plan five days in the south, the 2-Park Pass (Palmitos + Aqualand) is worth it: €62 adults, €45 children — up to 30 % off versus single tickets.
Holiday World Maspalomas is more an evening venue — a funfair with a 27-metre Ferris wheel, roller coaster, bumper cars, bowling, karaoke, escape rooms, an arcade and the «NOMAD» gastro market with 14 international food concepts. Entry to the grounds is free, individual rides paid via top-up cards. Open Wed/Thu/Sun 16:00–23:00, Fri/Sat 16:00–24:00. Practical note: works only partially for children under 1.35 m and 8 years old, because many rides have height requirements. Check children's height beforehand.
Sioux City Park in San Agustín is a Wild West theme park with cowboy shows, horse demonstrations and a reconstructed Western village. Most attractive for 6–10-year-olds. Bus line 30 from Las Palmas, line 32 from Maspalomas.
Poema del Mar — the aquarium for rainy days
Gran Canaria gets little rain, but Calima (Sahara dust episodes) and occasional tropical days do happen. When the beach is off, Poema del Mar in Las Palmas is the answer. The aquarium belongs to the Loro Parque group (Tenerife) and at 12,000 m² is one of Europe's most modern. 35 different ecosystems, three main zones («The Jungle», «Reef», «Deep Sea»), including a 36-metre panoramic tank window and a shark tank with a glass tunnel.
Open daily 9:30–17:30, last entry 17:00. Bus lines 12, 21, 45, 47 or 60 to Santa Catalina. A combined Poema del Mar ticket plus a stroll through Vegueta (15 min away) fills half a day. Baby changing room on the lower level, lift between floors, ramps instead of stairs — exemplary accessibility. A mother of two summed up: «We paid more than €100 for two adults and two children. Worth it, but not cheap.»
The best beaches for children
Four beaches sit at the top of the family list:
Playa de Amadores (between Puerto Rico and Anfi) — artificially built, half-moon shape protected by breakwaters, crystal-clear calm water, ideal for toddlers from 1 year up. Loungers and umbrellas for hire, toilets, several restaurants right on the sand. Busy in summer, quietest in the morning.
Anfi del Mar (Mogán municipality) — Caribbean-style white sand beach, imported from the Bahamas. A lagoon, palm-lined promenade, a small bridge to a «platform» island with a wedding chapel. More picturesque than Amadores, but equally child-friendly.
Playa Costa Alegre in Arguineguín — the insider tip. Local feel, smaller crowds than the tourist hubs, playgrounds and a skatepark right next door. Bus line 1 from Maspalomas in 20 minutes.
Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas — the city beach. Three kilometres of golden sand, calm water at the northern end behind the natural reef «La Barra», surf waves at the southern end. Full of city families, lively atmosphere, lifeguards, toilets, showers, a sandcastle festival every summer.
What parents should know: Playa del Inglés has a nudist zone in the dunes and a section that belongs to the gay scene. Both are clearly marked, and the central family section (south of the northern point) is unaffected. Anyone wanting to build sandcastles with kids should head for the middle stretch.
Playa de Maspalomas with the famous dunes is more of a hike than a beach day — paths to the water are 200–400 m through sand, very hot in summer. The eastern entrance (Faro de Maspalomas) with short beach access is more practical for families.
Where should a family stay?
The island has three sensible family regions:
Maspalomas / Playa del Inglés / San Agustín in the south — the tourism hub with the largest family-resort selection. All theme parks 15–25 minutes away. More hours of sunshine than the north. Downsides: denser development, many all-inclusive hotels, less «real Spain».
Anfi del Mar / Puerto Rico / Amadores — better beaches, quieter than Maspalomas, good for more relaxed families. Theme parks 15–20 minutes away.
Las Palmas in the north — the city, with a beach. Works for families who want a city experience combined with the beach. Advantages: cheaper hotels, more local gastronomy, Poema del Mar walkable, dense bus network. Downsides: theme parks a 45-minute drive south, slightly more changeable weather (trade-wind effect).
Hotel chains with strong family programmes (kids' clubs, babysitter service, child-friendly buffets): Lopesan, Bull Hotels, Maritim, Cordial, Riu, Hipotels. The all-inclusive format is widespread here — anyone wanting to skip it books «Bed & Breakfast» and uses the many nearby restaurants.
Getting there and around the island
From Gran Canaria airport (LPA) to the south: Bus line 66 (Global, around 45 min, €6) or a taxi (around €35–45 fixed, 25 minutes). For families with small children, often more practical: a pre-booked transfer with a child seat (e.g. Welcome Pickups, Canary Transfer Service, around €50).
Rental car: The island is easy to explore by car. From the airport from €27 per day (Skyscanner average, as of May 2026), but watch out for Goldcar and similar budget providers because of hidden insurance surcharges. Safer (slightly more expensive): Hertz, Sixt, Cicar, AutoReisen — the latter two are locally Canarian. Always book child seats in advance.
Public transport: Global runs the island bus network «guaguas». Line 1 connects southern Maspalomas with Las Palmas every 20 minutes (50 min ride, €6.80). Line 30 is the central island axis. The Bonoguagua card saves money on more than six trips. Buses have low-floor access for buggies.
Practical tip: with toddlers, a combination of buses for main routes (Las Palmas–Maspalomas–Puerto de Mogán) plus the occasional taxi or Uber for the last few kilometres is often less stressful than the search for rental-car parking. With teenagers, a rental car is unbeatable for mountain excursions.
When is the best time to go?
With children there is no «bad» time, but there are differences:
November–March: 20–24 °C by day, 15–18 °C at night, water 18–20 °C. Optimal for parents who want to avoid heat. Swimming takes some getting used to for northern European children, but it's doable.
April–June: 22–26 °C, water 19–21 °C. Very stable weather patterns, fewer tourists than midwinter. The best all-round family travel window.
July–September: 26–29 °C, water 22–23 °C. Summer, hotels full, but the Atlantic breeze keeps the brutal mainland heat off. Calima episodes possible (Sahara dust winds, then temperatures above 35 °C, poor visibility).
October: 24–27 °C, water 22 °C. Very popular with German and Nordic families because their school holidays often fall in this window.
Watch the school calendar: British half-term (mid-February), Spanish Easter (variable March/April) and summer holidays (July/August) are peak season. If you're flexible: May, June, September, October offer the best balance of weather, prices and crowds.
Daily budget for a family
Realistic daily budgets for four (two adults, two children), as of May 2026:
Budget version (apartment, self-catering, beach, bus): €80–110 per day plus accommodation. A day trip to Las Palmas or a beach day with a picnic costs almost nothing.
Standard (hotel half-board, rental car, one theme park, one restaurant meal): €200–280 per day plus accommodation. A family pizza in a restaurant runs €40–55, a theme-park day Family Pack €106–118 plus snacks/ice cream (€15–25).
All-inclusive: Family-resort packages from €150/night/family (low season) up to €350 (high season). Plus theme-park entry separately if desired.
Saving levers: book theme parks online instead of at the gate (10–15 % saving), combination tickets, rental car instead of taxi for family outings, local restaurants instead of hotel buffet. A family of four planning a full week down south should budget around €1,500–2,500 weekly on top of the hotel.
Which age likes what?
Babies (0–18 months): beaches like Amadores and Anfi (flat, calm lagoons), Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden (shade), the hotel pool. Theme parks are possible but not really worth it before 18 months.
Toddlers (1.5–4 years): Palmitos Park (animals, shows, butterflies), Aqualand «Children's Paradise», Poema del Mar (no noise, all tanks at eye level), playgrounds in Las Palmas and Puerto Rico, the mini-train through Maspalomas.
Primary-school age (5–10 years): full Aqualand, all theme-park attractions (mind the 1.35 m height limit), camel rides in Maspalomas, buggy tour with parents, hiking (short trails), the submarine in Puerto Mogán.
Tweens/teenagers (11–17 years): surf lessons at Las Canteras, catamaran tour with dolphin watching, stand-up paddle, climbing (via ferrata in the central mountains), escape rooms, karting in Maspalomas, evenings at Holiday World or Yumbo shopping.
Frequently asked questions
- Do we need a rental car?
- Not necessarily. If you stay in the south and just plan theme parks plus beach, buses and the occasional taxi work fine. For day trips to the mountains or the north coast, a rental car is clearly superior.
- Which region is best for families?
- Maspalomas / Playa del Inglés for theme-park proximity and family-hotel choice. Anfi del Mar / Puerto Rico for the best children's beaches. Las Palmas for city plus beach.
- Are the beaches safe for toddlers?
- At most of them, yes. Lifeguards work all day at Las Canteras, Amadores, Anfi and the central sections of Playa del Inglés. Watch the flags (green = safe, yellow = caution, red = no swimming). Atlantic waves can still surprise you — keep an eye on children.
- How is the water quality?
- Very good. Several beaches carry the EU Blue Flag. Las Canteras, Amadores, Anfi del Mar have held this status for years.
- What to do during Calima?
- Indoor activities: Poema del Mar Aquarium, Elder Museum of Science, Casa de Colón. School-age children enjoy the Museo Canario in Vegueta. Calima usually lasts 1–3 days.
- Are the theme parks animal-friendly?
- A debate. Palmitos Park has dolphin shows, which international animal-welfare organisations criticise — Tripadvisor does not book tickets for this reason. Anyone uncomfortable with animal shows picks Aqualand (slides, no animals) and Poema del Mar (aquarium without shows).
- Is there a child discount on public transport?
- Children under 6 travel free on Global buses. From 6, they pay the regular fare. The Bonoguagua card is also available for children.
- What about the Maspalomas dunes?
- A beautiful walk, but not a classic beach. With small children, choose the eastern entrance near Faro de Maspalomas — shorter walk to the water. Sun protection important, no shade.
