Arrecife fills September with free culture in its neighbourhoods
Arrecife is filling September with free culture — and not only downtown. The capital of Lanzarote is taking puppet theatre, concerts, workshops and talks out to the sociocultural centres of Argana Baja, Valterra and San Francisco Javier. Admission is free, the town hall says, for as long as there is room in the venue.

The programme opened on Thursday 3 September. The logic is simple and family-friendly: if you cannot easily get into the centre, the culture comes to your street instead — walkable, ticketless, with no advance sale.
The opening night: puppets at 6pm, music at 7.30pm
The first item, on 3 September, was the children's puppet show "Único" at the Centro Sociocultural in Argana Baja at 6pm. The same evening, in the centre of town, the "Conciertos Hablados" series began at the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz at 7.30pm.
The opening session is titled "Fusión" and is led by Ciro Corujo; according to the listings, the musicians on stage were José Eduardo Martín and Carlos Martín. The format is not a straight gig: it pairs live music with storytelling and conversation about the roots of Canarian popular music, with the audience part of the exchange.
Which neighbourhoods are involved
This month the centre of gravity is clearly Argana Baja, which hosts the opening puppet show, the workshops and a talk. Valterra and San Francisco Javier follow, both with dates from the "Sabatea: teatro en los barrios" strand — theatre that deliberately travels out to the districts rather than asking the districts to travel in.
The Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz downtown remains the programme's second axis, hosting concerts, forums and an exhibition. Other districts sometimes mentioned in connection with the city's cultural life, such as Titerroy, do not appear in the published September listings.
"Arrecife crea arte": four days of workshops
The "Arrecife crea arte" workshops are announced for 4, 5, 9 and 10 September in Argana Baja. They sit alongside the Desidia street-art festival, which is working in the same neighbourhood on a mural trail. According to the listings, the sessions run from an introduction to spray-can work, through a "from sketch to wall" day, to a guided visit.
On signing up: the festival's side activities reportedly require booking in advance, with the official information pointing to the festival's own website. No minimum or maximum age has been published in the sources available. If you want certainty, ask the Centro Sociocultural directly before turning up.
What comes next: talks, a migration forum, piano and clowns
The rest of the month is deliberately mixed. A talk by Mani Modhwadia is announced for 8 September in Argana Baja at 7pm. On 9 September the Casa de la Cultura hosts a forum on racism and the "OBITen" exhibition, part of the third national migration gathering.
On 10 September Cultura Arrecife takes part in the 37th island craft fair at Mancha Blanca; on 11 September the pianist Natalia Nikolaeva plays the Tiempos Modernos festival at the Casa de la Cultura at 8pm. The neighbourhood strand closes with the storytelling session "Mujeres que cuentan" on 18 September in San Francisco Javier (6pm) and the show "Clowneando" on 26 September at the Centro Sociocultural in Valterra (11.30am).
Who runs it — and what it is not
The agenda is run by the Ayuntamiento de Arrecife through its culture department (Cultura Arrecife), with councillor Abigail González politically responsible. The town hall stresses that every activity organised by Cultura Arrecife is free to enter until the venue is full. No budget figure for the programme has been published in the sources consulted.
One clarification matters here: this neighbourhood programme is not the same thing as Arrecife en Vivo, the music festival that also runs in September and is also free, but which is a separate event with its own line-up in the public spaces of the city centre. The two run in parallel and should not be conflated.
The 6pm slots are scheduled with families in mind; the Casa de la Cultura concerts start later, at 7.30pm and 8pm.
