What changes for visitors in southern Lanzarote?

The research found no rule, closure or deadline linked to the case. None of the sources reviewed names flights, beaches or roads as affected.

The incident happened far out at sea, about 150 kilometres north-east of Arrecife. La Voz de Lanzarote has not said where the boat landed or whether the two bodies came ashore.

Anyone staying in the southern resorts need not change anything, going by current information. Salvamento Marítimo (the state sea rescue service), the Guardia Civil and the Delegación del Gobierno en Canarias (the government's representation in the islands) had issued no statement by Monday.

What is known about the boat and the dead?

At least seven people died on a boat carrying nearly 140, La Voz de Lanzarote reported on 2 November. It cites sources at Salvamento Marítimo, who gave the figure to the news agency EFE.

Only two bodies stayed on board. According to survivors, the other five dead went overboard into the Atlantic, and the exact circumstances are still unclear, the report says.

The rescue took place on the night from Saturday to Sunday, which La Voz de Lanzarote calls intense. The outlet counted four operations around Lanzarote alone and says the number is provisional.

The boat's origin, its type, the number of survivors and their nationalities remain unknown. No investigation or arrests are known either, and no other outlet had published anything on the case when the research was done.

How many people reach the Canaries in 2026?

From 1 to 15 October 2026 the Interior Ministry counted 1,837 arrivals in the Canaries, against 643 in the same period of 2025. That is a rise of 185%, according to RTVC (the Canaries public broadcaster).

Over the whole year, though, 2026 is well below last year. From 1 January to 15 October, the same figures show 8,970 people arriving, against 13,491 a year earlier, which is 33.5% fewer.

Up to 15 August there were 4,808 arrivals, 59.5% fewer than the 11,883 a year earlier, says La Voz de Lanzarote, so October has cut the gap sharply. The research found no figures for Lanzarote alone.

In the whole of 2024, almost 47,000 people reached the Canaries, and about 18,000 in 2025, according to RTVC. Going by data up to 15 August, Ceuta and Melilla now take in more irregular arrivals than the Canaries.

Have there been similar cases on Lanzarote?

On 15 January 2018 a boat capsized off Bastión beach on Lanzarote, and seven people died. At least 27 people were on board.

The Defensor del Pueblo (Spain's ombudsman) opened an inquiry on 17 January 2018. It asked the government delegation about possible failures in the SIVE coastal surveillance system, after the Diputado del Común had raised the same concerns.

Deaths at sea usually go to a court. It is not confirmed which court is examining the current case.

Media regularly report arrests of suspected skippers, such as the two arrests in 2026 after a five-year-old girl died on a boat located on 30 June 2026, according to RTVC. Nothing comparable is known in the current case.

What happens next?

No dates have been published for an inquiry, post-mortems or the identification of the dead. According to the sources reviewed, the authorities have not yet commented publicly either.

Anyone following the story should watch for statements from Salvamento Marítimo, the Guardia Civil and the Delegación del Gobierno en Canarias. The Interior Ministry's October summary could not be found during the research.

The aid group Caminando Fronteras counted 3,090 deaths on routes to Spain for 2025, 1,906 of them on the Canary route. This is an estimate based on information from relatives, and the ministry publishes no comparable total.
