What happened on the Avenida on 1 November?

A fist fight broke out on Playa Blanca's main avenue on Sunday 1 November, All Saints' Day. It was broad daylight, and the taxi rank was full of cars, according to the report.

A young man of South American origin hit a much older man, and witnesses could not say why. His blows drove the older man onto the road, where several passing vehicles had to brake to avoid them.

The younger man then chased the older one into a closed shop. The older, stockier man ended up back on the street, opposite a well-known Irish pub, with nothing left in him.

There the shirtless man kicked him in the head several times as he lay on the ground. The report describes the older man at that moment as “completely defenceless”.

Who was arrested, and what is still open?

The Policía Local de Yaiza (the municipal police) arrested both men on Tuesday 3 November, two days after the incident. Their names, ages and nationalities have not been published.

Nothing is known about the older man's injuries or any hospital stay. The charges are not yet clear either.

The report does not say outright who the aggressor was. Its account suggests the shirtless man was the younger one, but that is not confirmed.

Nobody has reported whether the two appeared before a court or whether a judge imposed any conditions by Wednesday. Yaiza town hall, the Guardia Civil and the courts have issued no statement.

So the news of both arrests comes from the research of one local newspaper alone. No other source has confirmed it.

Does anything change for visitors and residents in Playa Blanca?

For holidaymakers and residents, nothing changes for now. There is no new rule, no closure of the Avenida and no change in prices.

Whether tourists were involved is not known. The authorities have not yet issued any advice for people in the area or an appeal for witnesses.

The case drew attention because it happened at a busy spot in broad daylight. Drivers braked, and the taxis stood only a few metres away.

How safe is Lanzarote according to the statistics?

Lanzarote and La Graciosa recorded 46 offences per 1,000 inhabitants in the third quarter of 2025, according to Interior Ministry data. That compares with 50.9 for Spain as a whole and 48.3 for the Canaries.

In the first quarter of 2026, the statistics counted 1,712 offences, 4.1% fewer than in the first quarter of 2025. The rate fell to 44.4 per 1,000 inhabitants, and the clear-up rate was 58.6%.

Violent robberies and sexual offences rose in that quarter, the latter by three cases. Pedro Viera, the central government's delegate for Lanzarote, said the data “confirm that Lanzarote remains a safe island”.

No figures were found for Yaiza or Playa Blanca specifically, nor for fights alone. The statistics cannot put this single case in context.

Who keeps Playa Blanca safe, and what happens next?

Yaiza council runs its own Policía Local, and the Guardia Civil covers the municipality from its Yaiza post. The central government decides on posts and staffing.

In January 2026, the council said it wanted to fill twelve vacancies in the Policía Local. On 14 January 2026, the council, led by mayor Óscar Noda, asked the state for more Guardia Civil officers.

The council cited population growth, above all in Playa Blanca, year-round tourism and heavy workloads. The report gave no current staffing figures.

How the case proceeds is open. No date was given for a hearing or an indictment, and any news is likely to come from the police, the council or a court.
