What happened on Tenerife on Sunday morning?
About 180,000 customers lost power on Tenerife early on Sunday 1 November, Diario de Avisos reports. First data put the outage at 27 minutes, from 08:24 to 08:51.
In the north, the paper reported cuts in Los Silos and at several points in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In the south, Las Chafiras and Costa del Silencio went dark.
The Tenerife-La Gomera system lost around 140 megawatts of capacity, according to the report. The outage also reached the municipalities of La Laguna and La Orotava.
What does the outage mean for visitors in the south?
Anyone in Las Chafiras or Costa del Silencio on Sunday morning was among those Diario de Avisos names. The grid operator says supply was fully back at 08:51.
The report mentions no closures, deadlines or applications. Flights, hotels and traffic do not appear in it either.
If you suffered damage, such as spoiled food, keep receipts and photos. The consumer directorate of the Gobierno de Canarias (Canary Islands government) also advises checking your home contents insurance.
Was the outage linked to the storm?
Two 220-kilovolt lines in the south, Granadilla-Vallitos and Vallitos-Abona, switched off, according to Diario de Avisos. At the same time, an important part of the generation at the Granadilla power station dropped out.
The grid operator brought all available generation online, including the emergency reserve. Service was fully restored at 08:51.
The outage coincided with a storm system and heavy rain. Whether lightning or the weather tripped the lines, the report does not say.
The state weather agency Aemet had issued an orange warning for the greater Santa Cruz area, with up to 30 litres per square metre possible in one hour. The Canary Islands government kept its rain alert active for that region, while the rest of the island was on pre-alert.
How does the outage compare with earlier ones?
On 29 September 2019, about 950,000 people on Tenerife sat without power for around nine hours, Diario de Avisos writes. The fault lay at the Granadilla de Abona substation and ran from 13:11 to about 22:25.
Tenerife went dark again on 15 July 2020, from 09:41 to 16:44, as the broadcaster RTVC lists. About 950,000 people were affected.
The Consejo de Gobierno de Canarias (the regional cabinet) fined Unelco 10,002,751 euros and E-Distribución 6,000,001 euros, 16 million euros in total, RTVC reports. It rated the breaches as very serious.
During storm Therese in March 2026, about 900 people on Tenerife lost power, according to Diario de Avisos. At the end of February 2026 the same paper counted more than 3,500 customers, including 2,829 in Arona.
Is there compensation for the 27 minutes?
The portal Economist & Jurist says any interruption of more than 3 minutes counts as unplanned. The 27 minutes on 1 November are well above that.
For damage such as broken appliances or spoiled food, you need receipts as proof. Claims are excluded for announced maintenance or force majeure, and whether a storm counts as force majeure is unconfirmed in this case.
Start with a written complaint to your electricity supplier. If there is no reply within a month, go to the Canary Islands economy department (Consejería de Economía, Industria, Comercio y Conocimiento) or to your local consumer office, the OMIC.
In 2019 the consumer group OCU cited a credit of up to about 10% of the annual bill, around 21 euros for an urban household. That figure comes from the 2019 blackout and may not fit 27 minutes, so check the current rules.
What is still open?
Nobody has said whether Endesa or the grid operator Red Eléctrica de España is investigating the incident. Nothing has been published yet on compensation or a fine.
The report names no one responsible and quotes nobody. It rests on first data, and no second report on the incident has appeared.
According to one report, the Canary Islands government is pushing ahead with two emergency power plants on Tenerife to prevent blackouts. Details are unconfirmed, and anyone travelling in the coming days should watch the latest Aemet warnings.
