When and where does Valverde celebrate the Inmaculada in 2026?

The portal Festivales de España gives the period as about 29 November to 10 December 2026, with 8 December as the main day. These dates are an expectation, because the portal infers them from earlier editions.

Another line on the same page says 1 to 10 December 2026. Visitors should not plan around a fixed start and can treat 8 December as the one safe date.

Festivales de España names the Iglesia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and the central square, postcode 38900 Valverde, as the venues. The portal calls the church the main place of worship in the town and on the whole of El Hierro.

Valverde is the capital of El Hierro and sits at 600 metres above sea level, says Festivales de España. The portal calls the patron saint festivities the most important date in the capital’s festival calendar.

What does it cost, and what is on the programme?

Entry to all religious and traditional events is free, according to Festivales de España. Whether evening acts such as concerts or comedy charge admission is not known.

An official 2026 programme from the Ayuntamiento de Valverde (the town council) could not be found as of 3 November. Times, exact venues and performers for 2026 therefore remain open.

The 2025 edition shows what visitors can expect. RTVC reported the switching on of the Christmas lights, the Tributo a Mecano concert and a performance by the group Ni 1 Pelo de Tonto, plus the Festival del Mayor, a music gala for older people, and cultural and sporting events.

On 8 December 2025, RTVC reports, the traditional Mass and procession followed, with the Banda Insular de Música. The comedian Darío López from Tenerife closed the programme on 9 December with his show EVOLUCIONANDO.

Festivales de España also lists a Novenario (nine days of devotions), flower offerings, an island folklore festival, dance nights and a crafts market. Tastings of DOP cheese, wine, honey and gofio (Canarian toasted flour) appear there too, but the portal does not show which items take place in 2026.

How do visitors get to Valverde?

From Tenerife, a ferry runs from Los Cristianos to Puerto de La Estaca, and the crossing takes 2 hours 30 minutes, says Festivales de España. The portal names Naviera Armas and Fred. Olsen as the operators.

According to the same portal, Binter flies to El Hierro from northern Tenerife and from Gran Canaria. Timetables and prices have not been checked with the ferry firms or Binter, so anyone planning a trip should look there.

Festivales de España puts Valverde 8 kilometres from the port and 7 kilometres from the airport. The sources do not say how to reach the town from there, for example by bus or taxi.

The portal advises booking accommodation early, because the island has limited hotel capacity. That is the advice of an aggregator, not an official recommendation, and nothing turned up on road closures or parking rules.

Why is 8 December a public holiday?

The feast of the Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception) on 8 December is a public holiday across Spain, and in 2026 it falls on a Tuesday. The calendar gives the weekday; the sources do not mention it.

RTVC reported in 2023 that the Inmaculada has been Spain’s patron saint since 1644. The festival then included a Eucharist and a procession with the image of the Virgin through the streets of Valverde.

RTVC links the devotion to the miracle of Empel in 1585, and the Inmaculada is patron of the Spanish infantry. The sources do not say whether shops, restaurants and offices open on 8 December.

What is still open, and what happens next?

The research leaves open the 2026 programme from the Ayuntamiento de Valverde, the times, the venues of the evening shows and any ticket prices. It is also unconfirmed whether the Banda Insular de Música will accompany the procession as in 2025.

It is equally unclear whether the 29 November start is right. According to Festivales de España the 2025 edition began on that date, but the RTVC report on it only appeared on 5 December 2025.

The research assumes the programme will appear in November on the websites of the Ayuntamiento de Valverde and the Cabildo de El Hierro (the island government) at elhierro.es. For the diary, note 29 November as the expected start, 8 December as the main day and 10 December as the expected end.
