What does this mean for people looking for a home on Lanzarote?
Anyone searching for a rental home on Lanzarote now faces far more competition than eight years ago. In the province of Las Palmas, which includes Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, contacts per listing rose from 8 in the third quarter of 2018 to 36 in the third quarter of 2026, according to idealista.
No published comparison figure exists for Lanzarote alone. However, La Voz de Lanzarote considers it likely that demand on the island is even higher because supply is so tight.
Residents and newcomers feel the effect directly: quick decisions are becoming essential. In the first quarter of 2026, 18 percent of homes rented through idealista in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria were let in less than 24 hours.
The average rent in the Canary Islands stood at 13.29 euros per square metre in July 2026. It fell slightly by 0.41 percent compared with June 2026, idealista reported.
Why is supply so tight?
The Canary Islands lost 8,676 regular rental homes between 2018 and 2025. That equals a 32.6 percent drop in the supply available on idealista.
Many homes are moving into holiday letting or are offered as vivienda vacacional (holiday home). That further squeezes the market for residents who live on the island all year round.
Official bodies do not publish a reliable comparison series for rental competition on Lanzarote against Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria or Tenerife. Such comparisons cannot be drawn from the stock figures.
42 publicly subsidised homes in Yaiza: who can apply?
The Instituto Canario de la Vivienda (ICAVI), the Canarian housing institute, is launching a process for 42 publicly subsidised homes in Montaña Roja, Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza. The homes have three bedrooms and a garage and are allocated under the standard rental model.
Applications can be submitted from 26 October up to and including 16 November 2026. The process runs electronically through the Gobierno de Canarias.
The homes must be the permanent and usual residence of the selected households or shared households. For visitors and people living on Lanzarote only temporarily, this allocation is not intended as holiday or short-term accommodation.
The report gives no rent level, no income limits and no full list of eligibility criteria for these homes. Interested applicants should contact ICAVI directly about the exact requirements.
What else is the government planning on Lanzarote?
The Gobierno de Canarias puts its Lanzarote programme at 701 public homes. Of these, 201 are under construction, 382 are planned and 118 have already been purchased.
They include 200 planned homes in Los Geranios 4 and 46 planned rental homes in Calle Triana in Arrecife. A tender for the 46 homes is scheduled for 2026.
Housing responsibility lies with the Instituto Canario de la Vivienda (ICAVI) under the Consejería de Obras Públicas, Vivienda y Movilidad of the Gobierno de Canarias. The Cabildo de Lanzarote can help implement the housing plan through agreements.
What should home seekers do now?
Anyone looking for a rental home on Lanzarote should keep documents such as proof of income, ID and references ready. With 18 percent of lets completed in less than 24 hours, speed often decides.
For subsidised homes, registration in the public register of applicants for subsidised housing is a requirement. Registration allows participation in allocation processes but does not guarantee a home.
The application deadline for the 42 homes in Yaiza ends on 16 November 2026. No rent level or income limits have been published so far.
