Which airport is the right one for arrival?
Tenerife has two commercial airports: Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna (TFN) in the north near La Laguna and Tenerife Sur (TFS) in the south of the island. The choice of airport has a significant impact on the entire first journey.
Tenerife Norte airport is closer to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz. Tenerife Sur airport is more convenient for many holiday resorts in the south such as Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje.
According to official information, the distance between the north and the south is often underestimated. Anyone living in the south but landing in the north needs considerably more time for the transfer.
Bus route 343 connects both airports directly without intermediate stops in about 50 minutes. The published fare between the airports is 9.70 euros according to Aena.
How do I get from the airport to my accommodation?
At both airports, the official taxi ranks are located at the terminal. Airport operator Aena expressly advises against accepting offers outside the marked taxi rank.
At Tenerife Norte airport, TITSA routes 20 run to Santa Cruz and La Laguna for 2.65 euros each, and route 30 runs to Puerto de la Cruz. The bus stops are in the arrivals area on level 0; at Tenerife Norte airport, the bus car park is on level −1.
At Tenerife Sur airport, route 40 runs to Costa Adeje via Los Cristianos, route 10 towards Santa Cruz and night route 711 between Santa Cruz, the airport, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje.
If problems arise, a receipt should be requested.
What should be done in the first hours after arrival?
New arrivals should keep their accommodation details, passport or ID card and entry documents to hand. The exact name and address of the accommodation should be saved offline.
A local emergency and contact list is useful. Private transport offers outside official taxi ranks should not be used.
If arriving late, the last bus connection should be checked directly with TITSA. Timetables can change.
For a permanent move, the administrative steps do not necessarily belong in the first hours. In practice, however, it is useful to contact the relevant municipality (ayuntamiento) and the Spanish authorities on the first or second working day regarding empadronamiento, residence status and, where applicable, the NIE.
Responsibilities and required documents differ depending on the reason for residence and the municipality. A blanket list of documents should therefore not be used.
Which region suits my everyday life?
The choice of first place of residence has a significant impact on daily life. Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna offer central administrative, educational and transport connections; route 20 links both cities with Tenerife Norte.
Puerto de la Cruz and the north are connected via routes 30, 104 and 343 from Tenerife Norte. The north is greener, more historic and more local in character.
Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and the south have direct bus connections to Tenerife Sur airport, including route 40 and night route 711. The south is usually drier and more tourist-oriented.
The connections mentioned are airport routes. Specific journey times and stops should be checked in the current TITSA timetable before each journey.
What weather can I expect in the first few days?
For climate comparisons, station data must be used, not individual daily measurements. AEMET publishes climate normals and statistical indicators for reference periods.
For the first few days, light clothing, sun protection, a thin jacket for wind and evening hours, and sturdy footwear are advisable. For stays at higher altitudes, additional warm clothing is recommended.
An island-wide statement on the best months, calima and trade wind periods cannot be reliably derived from the available sources. Current values and warnings: CITA weather (cita.news/de/wetter.html) and AEMET.
What costs can I expect in the first few days?
The official, accessible TITSA examples give the following bus prices as of 2026: Puerto de la Cruz–Santa Cruz costs 5.25 euros, or 3.45 euros with the Bono bus card. Puerto de la Cruz–Tenerife Sur costs 13.55 euros, or 9.55 euros with the Bono bus card.
Puerto de la Cruz–Playa de las Américas costs 14.60 euros, or 9.60 euros with the Bono bus card. Playa de las Américas–Santa Cruz costs 9.45 euros, or 6.25 euros with the Bono bus card.
The Bono bus card can roughly halve the fare. It is not available on the bus, but is sold at TITSA stations and sales points, among other places.
As a guide to the tourist price level, the official Tenerife analysis for 2023 shows average spending of 168.91 euros per person per day. Average flight costs were around 359 euros per person. These figures are tourism averages, not relocation costs.
