Why only the bus gets in
The terminal is a working port, not a concert hall. The ticket seller's notice is blunt: access to the port area is only possible with the special service laid on by the municipal bus company; anyone arriving by private car, taxi or on foot will not be let in. The buses leave from the back of the El Muelle shopping centre in Santa Catalina; according to the culture portal lpacultura.com, it sits at the end of Plaza de Canarias, opposite Avenida Mesa y López. The first bus leaves at 20:30 and return trips start at 23:30, "once the concert ends". None of the sources gives a frequency, a last departure or the number of buses. On 21 September guaguas.com had published nothing about the service yet.
The programme: from Verdi to The Firebird
The evening takes its title from its first piece, "La forza del destino". According to the festival's page, it opens with Verdi's overture to that opera, followed by Richard Strauss's tone poem "Don Juan", Jean Sibelius's "Valse triste" and "Finlandia", and a selection from Stravinsky's "Firebird" Suite in its 1919 version. After that, the programme list adds three popular pieces: Zequinha de Abreu's "Tico-Tico", a mambo by Dámaso Pérez Prado and the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss I. The theme, according to the festival: the great forces that drive human beings, with fate as the common thread.
Who is playing
The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (OFGC) is the island's orchestra. According to the festival, symphonic activity in Las Palmas dates back to 1845; today's orchestra grew out of the public foundation set up by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria in 1980 and has toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and China. It is conducted by Karel Mark Chichon, the OFGC's chief conductor and artistic director since May 2017, under contract until the 2026–27 season. His own biography says he was born in London in 1971, comes from Gibraltar and was chief conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern from 2011 to 2017.
Among the cranes since 2012
The "Concierto entre contenedores" (concert among the containers) began in 2012. By the festival's count, this year is the OFGC's 15th appearance at TEMUDAS and its 13th in the port: in 2020 and 2021 the concert moved to Parque Santa Catalina because of Covid restrictions. It is made possible by Boluda Corporación Marítima and the Port Authority of Las Palmas. The programme page speaks of "more than 3,000 people" for whom the terminal is opened. According to the organisers, the concert has sold out in previous years; they do not say which ones.
The festival's final week: 24 to 26 September
The concert closes the 30th edition of TEMUDAS, the biggest in its history according to the festival: 95 performances, 17 productions from the Canary Islands, 26 from the rest of Spain and 10 from abroad. Almost everything around Parque Santa Catalina is free. From the closing days: "Kipppunkt" by the German company Theater Titanick (Thursday 22:00 and Friday 21:00, Espacio Parque), "Sodade" by France's Minuit Compagnie (Thursday and Friday, 20:00), "We Will Rock You 3.0" with the Banda Sinfónica Municipal (Friday 22:00, stage A), and circus from 12:00 on Saturday, including Duo Kaos from Italy and Guatemala. Apart from the concert, the only paid show is Rocío Pozo's flamenco piece "Liberté" at the Teatro Pérez Galdós, for 14 euros; the festival lists 25 and 26 September, while the theatre's website showed only the Saturday on 21 September. "Cenadefindeaño. Resonare" (Friday and Saturday) requires free registration on lpacultura.com, where only the 22:00 slots were still available on Monday.
