What changes for commuters and holidaymakers?

The work takes place only at night, from Sunday to Thursday between 22:00 and 06:00. During these hours there will be partial road closures and restrictions in both directions, according to RTVC.

The Cabildo de Tenerife advises drivers to follow the temporary signage and reduce their speed. Motorists should also follow the instructions of traffic staff.

For commuters between Santa Cruz, the south-east area and Arafo this means possible delays at night. No fixed alternative route or maximum queue time was given in the information available.

The specific closures are to be announced as the work progresses. Anyone driving on the TF-1 at night should check traffic notices before setting off.

Which stretch is being resurfaced?

The scheme covers 18.6 km of the TF-1 between kilometre points 1+400 and 20+000. It affects the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo.

The first lot covers 8.5 km between kilometre points 1+400 and 9+900 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and El Rosario. The contractor is Transformaciones y Servicios, S.L., for €7,507,192.86 including IGIC.

The second lot runs for 10.1 km between kilometre points 9+900 and 20+000 through El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo. Señalizaciones Villar, S.A. is carrying out the work for €6,348,657.39 including IGIC.

Both lots will be carried out at the same time. The plans include renewing the road surface, edge rumble strips and new thermoplastic road markings on the motorway and its slip roads.

New information signs will also be installed and the central reservation barriers improved. In the first lot, slip roads will also be resurfaced.

How much does the resurfacing cost?

The Cabildo de Tenerife has budgeted €13,855,850.25 including IGIC for the whole scheme. The planned construction period is six months.

The two lots together cost exactly this amount: €7,507,192.86 for the first and €6,348,657.39 for the second. The work is linked to the planned BUS-VAO lane between kilometre points 1+400 and 20+000.

This lane is to be operated with intelligent transport systems. The resurfacing continues earlier surface renewals between Arico, Fasnia and Güímar.

Those covered around 24 km and an investment of 30 million euros. Together, around 42.6 km of the TF-1 would then have been resurfaced and about 43.86 million euros invested.

Why is the work being done at night?

The night-time schedule is intended to reduce disruption during the busiest periods on the southern motorway. Some sections of the TF-1 carry more than 70,000 vehicles a day.

Work takes place from Sunday to Thursday, from 22:00 to 06:00 each night. No work is done on Fridays or Saturdays.

The resurfacing uses asphalt mixes with up to 50 percent recycled material from previous road surfaces. This reduces the need for new raw materials.

The contracts include a three-year guarantee period for the work carried out. RTVC reports this, citing the Cabildo de Tenerife.

What is still open?

The information available does not include specific nights for individual closures or detailed diversions. Effects on bus routes were also not mentioned.

The Cabildo de Tenerife had not published an exact end date within the announced six-month period by Friday. The specific traffic restrictions are to be communicated as the work progresses.

No additional application, fee or residence rules apply to residents, foreign nationals or visitors. Only the night-time traffic situation is affected.
